Myra Jane Hammonds, 85, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, at her home in Rochelle, Illinois. She was born February 21, 1941, in Cherry Valley, Arkansas, the daughter of Samuel and Minnie (Smith) Johnson. Myra married James W. Hammonds in 1970 in Wynne, Arkansas. He preceded her in death in 1998.
Myra enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, who loved their mawmaw. She was a very generous person who would give her last dime just to make them happy.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by one sister, Francis Hammonds and three brothers: infant brother, J.W. Johnson, Donald Johnson and Jimmie Johnson.
Myra is survived by her daughter, Tina (Mel) Wilton of Rochelle, Illinois; grandchildren: Kyle Hammonds, Rachel Hammonds, Melvin Wilton, Matthew Wilton, and Robert Wilton; and one great-grandchild on the way.
A public visitation will be held Thursday, March 19, 2026 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Unger Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle, Illinois. Burial will follow at a later date in Wynne, Arkansas. Memorials may be made to the family. Visit ungerhorner.com to sign the online guest book.
