Nancy Cokeley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hutchinson Funeral Chapel on Nov. 18, 2024.
Nancy J. Cokeley, 84, of Haven, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2024, in Wichita, KS. Nancy was born on February 11, 1940, in Haven, KS, the daughter of William and Irene G. (Graber) Gilmore.
Nancy graduated from Haven High School in 1958 and earned her bachelor's degree in English from Emporia State University. She was an English teacher for 10 years. She had an impact on multiple students who realized later in life that she taught more than just English. On August 22, 1959, Nancy married Major C. Cokeley Sr. Nancy and Major started out with nothing more than a car. Over the years, they built the family farm up to a 3,000-acre livestock and farming operation. She spent 31 years dairying and farming. Nancy and Major loved living the lifestyle that they created. They worked side by side up until his passing in 2014. Even after Major's passing, she was involved in the farming operations up until her death. Nancy was also an avid coin collector.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Debra Whittle; son, Major C. "Cy" Cokeley Jr. and wife Lisa; sister, Norma Hale; brother, O.P. Gilmore; grandson, Zackary Cokeley; granddaughter, Megan Cokeley; eight great grandchildren and multiple nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Major; and a brother, Tom Gilmore.
Per Nancy's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Reno County or the American Diabetes Association and can be sent in care of Hutchnson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson, KS 67502.
