Nancy Scocca Mathison passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024, after a year-long battle with ovarian cancer. She was just a few weeks shy of her 61st birthday. Nancy is survived by her husband Jim, her beloved daughter Katie, her sisters Susan, and Julie and eleven nieces and nephews.
Nancy had three different vocations in her life. After high school, she attended the Culinary Institute of America and became a professional chef, working at upscale restaurants in New Jersey. When her culinary career proved unsatisfying, she reinvented herself as a bond trader at a regional brokerage house in NJ. When her daughter, Katie, was born, she left the securities business behind and dedicated herself to being a mother and homemaker, and she never looked back. Nancy was very active in her church communities, both in her home state of NJ and in her adopted state of SC after she relocated south. She organized and participated in multiple prayer groups, and was particularly fond of praying the Rosary, both alone and with others. Throughout her long illness, her faith in God never wavered, and it provided her with both comfort and strength.
One of Nancy's biggest passions in life was cooking for and feeding people. Her first Thanksgiving meal after getting married included seven different vegetables, prompting one of her in-laws to note that they were not even aware that many different types of vegetables even existed. Nancy often supported charities that help to insure people have adequate access to food and nutrition, and two of her favorites were Mary's Meals and The St. Vincent DePaul Society. In lieu of flowers, Nancy requested that people make a donation to one of these charities or any other favored charity that helps to ensure that all people have access to enough food.
Nancy will have a Latin Funeral Mass at noon on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at the Prince of Peace Church in Taylors, SC. After the service, she will travel to NJ to be buried near other family members at Holy Cross Cemetery in Basking Ridge, NJ. The family is also planning a memorial Mass for Nancy at The Shrine Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament in Raritan, NJ at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday May 21, 2024, so that family and friends from NJ can also say goodbye.
