Nancy Sue Raley

Nancy Sue Raley, 77, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2022 after a graceful battle with multiple myeloma. A graveside service to celebrate and honor her life will be held Friday, August 5, 2022 at 11:00 am at Forest Hill Cemetery in Nashville, NC.
Nancy was born in Elizabeth City to the late Adrian Rupert and Sue Hight Raley, then spent her childhood years in Creedmoor and Nashville, NC. After two years at St. Mary's Junior College (Raleigh), Nancy graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as a member of Kappa Delta Sorority with a B.A. in Journalism. She went on to serve as news director at Stratford College, Hollins College and Georgetown University. The majority of her professional life was spent in Washington, DC working in the field of communication editing numerous professional publications. She became a Senior Vice President with both CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education) and NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) where she was a valued and respected colleague and friend.
Nancy loved fashion, art, old movies, animals and a good book. She could often be found dressed in black with a strong cup of coffee in her hand browsing in an interesting boutique. Nancy kept up with the news and current events and always enjoyed a lively conversation about politics.
With retirement came a move to Raleigh to be near her brother, Michael, and his family. After relocating, Nancy found time to volunteer with the North Carolina Museum of Art, Purr Partners and her local precinct.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by the love of her life, Michael Byrnes, whom she met while working at Georgetown University. She is survived by her brother Michael and his wife Melissa, niece Adrian and nephew Reeves, wife Erin, and their boys, Wells and Pfeiffer.
