Obituary of Nancy Carol Walters Rouleau

Allegany, NY Nancy Carol Walters Rouleau, 84, of Allegany, passed away surrounded by family at home early on Thursday (July 24, 2025) after a long, brave battle with cancer. Born November 2, 1940, in Olean, she was the daughter of the late Therold Charles Walters and Mary Margaret Giermek Walters Sutter. Nancy graduated from Olean High School in 1958 and married the love of her life of 66 years, James F. Rouleau of Saugus, MA, on May 9, 1959. After her high school graduation, she worked as a New York Telephone Company switchboard operator and worked a smattering of part-time jobs while raising a family in the community of Allegany and was a member of Saint Bonaventure Parish. Nancy loved puzzle making, and watching all kinds of sports, news, and old movies. She also liked to go to the casino with her children. Her family will miss her infectious laugh, her no-nonsense advice, and her unwavering strength. Nancy always said that God blessed her over and over again when she had her children, and they in turn had her grandchildren and great grandchild. In addition to her husband, James, Nancy is survived by five children: Kimberly (Stu) Moore of Allegany, Lisa (Melanie Blake) Rouleau of Olean, Daniel (Suzanne) Rouleau of Newport News, VA, Michele (Richard) Trietley of La Crosse, WI, and Renee (Daniel) DeRose of Ellicottville. She is also survived by her favorite people, her grandchildren: Alexandra Rich, Chelsie Rich, Richard (Shirali) Trietley III, Kyle Trietley, Anthony (Claire) Rouleau, Austin (Ariel) Rouleau, Joseph DeRose, Marisa DeRose, Nicholas (Michelle) DeRose, Gianna DeRose, Abigail Moore, Jacqueline (Robert) Balkunas, Erica (Michael Shaffer) Blake, and her great-grandchildren Ellora J. Trietley and her brother who will be arriving in September, Robbie Balkunas, Teagan Shaffer, and Camden Shaffer. Nancy also leaves behind her siblings Margaret (Arthur) Shaner of Portville, and David Sutter of Portville; a beloved sister-of-the-heart, Diane Walters of Olean, and several nieces and nephews. Nancy was predeceased by her stepfather, Vergil Sutter, and two brothers, Vergil Sutter and Charles T. Walters. Nancy's family would like to thank all of the medical professionals including HomeCare & Hospice and especially Delaney Froebel who treated her with immense compassion and respect. Respecting Nancy's wishes, there will be a private service with burial to take place in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined, and memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are with the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, Olean.
