NEW COLUMBIA - Nancy A. Sampsell died Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at her home in New Columbia. She passed just 80 days after the love of her life, Karl E. Sampsell, who died on August 11th.
On December 5, 1934, she was born at home to Raymond Sr. and Anna Buss Musser and grew up in that Musser family home near the railroad station on High Street in West Milton.
After graduating from Milton Area High School with the class of 1952, she attended nursing school at Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing. She was hired at Evangelical Community Hospital right after graduation and retired from there 44 years later. Most of her nursing career was spent in the nursery caring for newborns and their mothers at The Family Place.
In January of 1959, she married Karl E. Sampsell. It was a cold Thursday evening when Rev. Thomas Musser joined them in matrimony in a small ceremony attended by family and a few close friends at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in West Milton.
They made their home in a third-floor apartment on Bound Avenue in Milton before Karl built their home outside of West Milton. The couple raised their children and entertained grandchildren there over the next 60 years.
Nancy was always positive, kind, caring, and known for her cheerful disposition and bright smile. She cared for her grandchildren and her aging sisters-in-law. She was a frequent volunteer for many years, rarely saying no when asked to help. She volunteered at her church, St. Paul's UCC, where she was a lifelong member and for events at West Milton Memorial Park. After her retirement, she volunteered at Evangelical Hospital.
She was the last of her siblings: sisters Donna Rae Burgett, Bonnie Rosbach, Ida Mae (Tiny) Springer, and Mary Ellen (Sis) Wallick, and brothers Bob, Jim (Snook), and Raymond, Jr (Butch) Musser.
She is survived by daughter Lorena, her son Ian (Jennie) Hilner, and Ian's father, Jim Hilner; son Karl R., his son Carson, and Carson's mother Georgia; son Darrell, his children Charlie (Matthew) Nogle and Ty (Gabrielle) Sampsell, and their mother, D'Arcy, and her nephew, Mike Rosbach. She also leaves 4 great-grandchildren: Lisa Hilner, Quint, Karlee, and Aiken Nogle. She was preceded in death by her life-long best friend, Wanda Aikey, and son-in-law, Kevin Taylor.
The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to all the caregivers who made it possible for Nancy and Karl to remain in their home together for their final 3 years. Special thanks to Melissa, Kim, Deb, Cathy, and Cat for their dedicated and loving care. The invaluable service of Wellspan Hospice of Lewisburg was much appreciated in recent weeks.
Memorial donations may be made to Evangelical Community Hospital Foundation, 1 Hospital Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837, please note The Family Place in the memo. A celebration honoring the lives of both Nancy and Karl is being planned for December.
The family is being assisted by the Shaw Funeral Home 400 N. Front St. Milton.
