Maria Nancy Sanchez Valencia Zuluaga
Deuteronomy 6:5
Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
Our mother and matriarch, Maria Nancy Sanchez Valencia Zuluaga, peacefully departed this world at the age of 78 on Thursday, February 29th, 2024. Despite a three-year cancer illness, she had a pain-free transition with family at her side.
Nancy's life began on Saturday, August 18th, 1945. Parents Arturo Valencia Sanchez and Maria Lucinda Zuluaga Zuluaga were living in Manizales, Colombia, South America. At a young age, Nancy's parents moved to Tulua. The family started a small business primarily selling magazines and newspapers. Years later, her father started an optical store, Optica Medica. Nancy and her younger sister, Sonia, enjoyed a wonderful childhood surrounded by family and friends. Nancy would always consider her sister her closest friend.
Later, Nancy's parents moved the family to Cali. While there, a young physician, Dr. Gilberto Sanchez, rented a room from the family and would later become her husband. Gilberto and Nancy moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. Gilberto had received a Rockefeller Foundation and Kellogg Foundation scholarship to specialize in Cardiology under the tutelage of the renowned Dr. George E. Burch. While in New Orleans, Nancy and Gilberto welcomed their first two children, Carlos and George. Several years later, the family moved back to Cali, Colombia.
While in Cali, the family continued to grow with the birth of their 3rd child, daughter Christina. In Cali, Gilberto continued to practice medicine, conducted medical research and taught as a faculty professor at University del Valle. After civil unrest began to take hold in Cali, Nancy and Gilberto decided to return permanently to the United States. Gilberto's friend and fellow physician, Dr. Luis Ocampo (deceased) suggested they move to Parkersburg, West Virginia as they were in need of cardiologists.
In 1973 the family moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia, where Gilberto went into private practice. In 1976, the family welcomed their fourth and final child, Gilberto. Throughout their formative years, Nancy remained a very hands-on mother. She made sure that her children excelled and above all fostered a relationship with God.
Nancy was an active volunteer, dedicating her time to helping others. We all recall her love of delivering Meals on Wheels to those in need. In addition, Nancy was actively involved at St. Margaret Mary's church and regularly attended bible studies.
In 1989 the family faced a serious health challenge when Gilberto suffered a stroke that forced him into retirement. In the midst of this crisis, Nancy rose to the challenge, guiding the family through a move back to Buga, Colombia. It was a difficult time for Nancy as her family was fractured. While her youngest child, Gillie, moved to Colombia with the family, Carlos, George and Christina remained in the United States.
During this time, Nancy enjoyed treasured years with her father before his passing on. After his death, Nancy would go on to spend the next twelve years in Colombia running the family business, while continuing to enjoy cherished years with her mother. She often returned to the United States to spend time with her children and grandchildren.
In 2001, Nancy sold her business and real estate interests in Colombia and moved back to the United States, bringing her mother with her. She settled in her cherished Tarpon Springs condo where she lived the majority of her remaining years. She also enjoyed five years of life in Kannapolis, North Carolina near son, Carlos and his family. While in Florida, Nancy enjoyed living close to Christina, George and Gil.
Without question, Nancy's life purpose was devotion to Jehovah and the spreading of His word. A close friendship with a dear friend, Luz Marina, led her to study the bible for four years and led to her eventual baptism as a Jehovah's Witness in 1999. We all came to respect and admire her deep spiritual calling as a Jehovah's Witness. When asked in her final weeks of life what advice she could offer us, she said. "Deuteronomy 6:5, Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength".
Mom always said her first love was Jehovah and her second, the family. She was a dedicated wife, an extraordinary parent, grandma and mother-in-law, loyal sister, aunt, cousin and loving daughter to her parents. She showered us with wisdom, always guiding us in the right direction. Despite the distance, she would regularly write us letters providing advice, often quoting scripture. Her greatest earthly love she reserved for her ten (10) grandchildren. Nothing brought her greater joy than spending quality time with them. From talking about Jehovah, to playing dolls, to attending recitals and sporting events, to painting nails or watching movies, Mama Nancy was ever present.
Although Nancy was soft spoken, she was quite a social butterfly and had many friends. She developed a close bond with members of the Kingdom Hall in El Darien, Colombia, Tarpon Springs, Florida and Kannapolis, North Carolina. She also enjoyed lifelong friendships from her years in Colombia, as well as Parkersburg, West Virginia.
Mom leaves an extraordinary legacy:
Son Dr. Carlos Sanchez (Dr. Farzaneh Keshmiri Sanchez) and their three children: Davied Carlos, Daniel Arturo and Armon Sadrie; son Dr. George Sanchez (Claudia Ramirez Sanchez) and their two children: Dr. Andrew and Isabel; daughter Christina Nisperly (Ron Nisperly) and their two children: Savanna and Christian Marcelo; and son Attorney Gil Sanchez (Attorney Monica Chevasco Sanchez) and their three children: Sofia Loren, Estefania Elle and Emmanuel Valentino; sister Sonia Rebolledo (Diego Rebolledo); nieces Ana Lucia Clark (Mark Clark) and Sonia Ximena Garcia (Andres Garcia); nephews Santiago Rebolledo (Luz Amparo Rebolledo) and Diego Rebolledo.
Nothing will ever fill the void that mom leaves behind. However, she left us each fully prepared to continue our journey while charting our own unique course. In her final moments of life, Christina and Savanna held her close. We will forever miss you, Mom, and we thank you for all the love and support you granted to us, our spouses, and our children.

Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma y con todas tus fuerzas.
Nuestra madre y matriarca, María Nancy Sánchez Valencia Zuluaga, partió pacíficamente de este mundo a la edad de 78 años el jueves 29 de febrero de 2024. A pesar de
una enfermedad de cáncer de tres años, tuvo una transición sin dolor con su familia a su lado.
La vida de Nancy comenzó el sábado 18 de agosto de 1945. Los padres Arturo Valencia Sánchez y María Lucinda Zuluaga Zuluaga vivían en Manizales, Colombia, Sudamérica. A temprana edad, los padres de Nancy se mudaron a Tuluá. La familia inició un pequeño negocio que vendía principalmente revistas y periódicos. Años más tarde, su padre abrió una óptica, Óptica Médica. Nancy y su hermana menor, Sonia, disfrutaron de una infancia maravillosa rodeadas de familiares y amigos. Nancy siempre consideraría a su hermana su amiga más cercana.
Posteriormente, los padres de Nancy trasladaron a la familia a Cali. Mientras estuvo allí, un joven médico, el Dr. Gilberto Sánchez, le alquiló una habitación a la familia y luego se convertiría en su esposo. Gilberto y Nancy se mudaron a Nueva Orleans, Luisiana. Gilberto había recibido una beca de la Fundación Rockefeller y la Fundación Kellogg para especializarse en Cardiología bajo la tutela del reconocido Dr. George E. Burch. El amigo y colega médico de Gilberto, el Dr. Luis Ocampo (fallecido), sugirió que se mudaran a Parkersburg, Virginia Occidental, ya que necesitaban cardiólogos.
En 1973 la familia se mudó a Parkersburg, Virginia Occidental, donde Gilberto se dedicó a la práctica privada. En 1976, la familia dio la bienvenida a su cuarto y último hijo, Gilberto. A lo largo de sus años de formación, Nancy siguió siendo una madre muy activa. Se aseguró de que sus hijos sobresalieran y sobre todo fomentaran una relación con Dios.
Nancy era una voluntaria activa y dedicaba su tiempo a ayudar a los demás. Todos recordamos su amor por entregar Meals on Wheels a los necesitados. Además, Nancy participó activamente en la iglesia de St. Margaret Mary y asistió regularmente a estudios bíblicos.
En 1989 la familia enfrentó un serio problema de salud cuando Gilberto sufrió un derrame cerebral que lo obligó a jubilarse. En medio de esta crisis, Nancy aceptó el desafío y guió a la familia en su regreso a Buga, Colombia. Fue un momento difícil para Nancy ya que su familia estaba dividida. Mientras su hijo menor, Gillie, se mudó a Colombia con la familia, Carlos, George y Christina permanecieron en Estados Unidos.
Durante este tiempo, Nancy disfrutó de años preciados con su padre antes de su fallecimiento. Después de su muerte, Nancy pasaría los siguientes doce años en Colombia dirigiendo el negocio familiar, mientras seguía disfrutando de años preciados con su madre. A menudo regresaba a los Estados Unidos para pasar tiempo con sus hijos y nietos.
En 2001, Nancy vendió su negocio y sus intereses inmobiliarios en Colombia y regresó a los Estados Unidos, trayendo a su madre con ella. Se instaló en su preciado condominio en Tarpon Springs, donde vivió la mayor parte de los años que le quedaban. También disfrutó de cinco años de vida en Kannapolis, Carolina del Norte, cerca de su hijo Carlos y su familia. Mientras estuvo en Florida, Nancy disfrutó de vivir cerca de Christina, George y Gil.
Sin lugar a dudas, el propósito de la vida de Nancy era la devoción a Jehová y la difusión de Su palabra. Su amistad con una querida amiga, Luz Marina, la llevó a estudiar la Biblia durante cuatro años y finalmente la llevó a bautizarse como testigo de Jehová en 1999. Todos llegamos a respetar y admirar su profundo llamado espiritual como testigo de Jehová. Cuando se le preguntó en sus últimas semanas de vida qué consejo podría ofrecernos, dijo. "Deuteronomio 6:5, Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma y con todas tus fuerzas".
Mamá siempre decía que su primer amor fue Jehová y el segundo, la familia. Fue una esposa dedicada, una madre, abuela y suegra extraordinaria, una hermana leal, una tía, una prima y una hija amorosa para sus padres. Ella nos colmó de sabiduría, guiándonos siempre en la dirección correcta. A pesar de la distancia, ella nos escribía cartas con regularidad brindándonos consejos, a menudo citando las Escrituras. Su mayor amor terrenal lo reservó para sus diez (10) nietos. Nada le proporcionaba mayor alegría que pasar tiempo de calidad con ellos. Desde hablar de Jehová hasta jugar a las muñecas, asistir a recitales y eventos deportivos, pintarse las uñas o mirar películas, Mamá Nancy estuvo siempre presente.
Aunque Nancy hablaba con suavidad, era muy sociable y tenía muchos amigos. Desarrolló muchas amistades con miembros del Salón del Reino en El Darién, Colombia, Tarpon Springs, Florida y Kannapolis, Carolina del Norte. También disfrutó de amistades para toda la vida de sus años en Colombia, así como de Parkersburg, Virginia Occidental.
Mamá deja un legado extraordinario:

Nada llenará jamás el vacío que deja mamá. Sin embargo, nos dejó a cada uno completamente preparado para continuar nuestro viaje mientras trazamos nuestro propio rumbo único. En los últimos momentos de su vida, Christina y Savanna la abrazaron. Siempre te extrañaremos, mamá, y te agradecemos todo el amor y apoyo que nos brindaste a nosotros, a nuestros cónyuges y a nuestros hijos.
