Nancy Shivers Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 4, 2025.
Nancy Jane Shivers, 76, of Washington, DC, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2025, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Nancy was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, and friend, known for her unflagging optimism, kindness, and generosity to all who knew her. Born on August 5, 1949, in Cleveland, OH, to Fred and Dorothy Shorsher, Nancy spent her formative years in Westfield, NJ. She graduated from The Penn Hall School in Chambersburg, PA, in 1968. At Penn Hall, she was honored by her peers as the Senior Trophy Girl, a distinction awarded to the most-admired student in her graduating class-a harbinger of the many lives she would touch with her warmth, generosity, and gentle spirit. She continued her education at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, NJ.

On August 29, 1970, Nancy married Mitchell Shivers, her high school sweetheart and the love of her life. Nancy immediately and enthusiastically assumed the role of a United States Marine Corps officer's wife, including a one-year stint living at the United States Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan, while Mitch was on active duty in Vietnam. Upon their return to the United States, they built a beautiful family, raising their children, Mitchell, Jr., and Jane (Hoffman). Their 55-year marriage was marked by adventure and service, as they lived in interesting locales across the globe, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Jakarta, and London.

Nancy's talents and passions were many: she adored needlepoint, knitting, Nantucket basket making, tennis, golf, and sailing. Spending time with her three granddaughters on the water or in the kitchen ranked among her favorite ways to spend a day. Active in her community, Nancy was President of the Seaweeders Garden Club in Bay Head, NJ, a group inductee of the Monmouth University Athletic Hall of Fame for helping to found the school's football program, and a longtime volunteer for and supporter of the Wounded Veterans' Regatta held annually at the Bay Head Yacht Club. Nancy's enthusiasm and spirit of giving inspired those around her. She was a dedicated member of the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC, and a longtime member of the Bay Head Yacht Club.

She will be remembered most for her unwavering optimism, generous friendship, infectious laugh, sparkling smile, and genuine love and compassion for all she encountered. Nancy's legacy of kindness, charity, and sweetness endures in the hearts

of all she touched.

Nancy is survived by her devoted husband, Mitchell, her loving son, Mitchell Shivers, Jr., her cherished daughter, Jane Hoffman (Christian), and her three granddaughters, Avery, Claire, and Blythe Hoffman, who brought her endless pride and joy.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of New Vernon, 2 Lees Hill Road, New Vernon, New Jersey, 07976, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. with a reception immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Nancy's name to the Semper Fi and America's Fund (thefund.org).
