Nancy Ellen Stamey

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nancy Ellen Stamey, who left us on Monday, February 17, 2025 at the age of 79. Nancy was a devoted Christian, beloved aunt, and cherished friend whose legacy of compassion, leadership, and faith will continue to touch all who knew her.

Nancy was born on August 23, 1945 in Toccoa, Georgia to John and Rose Ellen Stamey. John and Rose Ellen's parenting instilled in Nancy a love of God, family, and steadfast work ethic which guided her through life. After graduating from Stephens County High School, Nancy obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing from Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia; during her studies, she earned the position of Head Nurse of Medical College of Georgia at the age of 23. At age 29, Nancy became a neurological nursing instructor at East Carolina University. In addition to instructing, she co-designed a curriculum for the newly created Master's in Nursing program at ECU. After teaching, Nancy transitioned into a leadership role as a healthcare executive at the age of 37, beginning as Chief Executive Officer for Mansfield Community Hospital in Mansfield, Texas. Nancy led the construction and operation of a 55-bed hospital. She built multiple hospitals, thereafter, paving the way for future female executives in the healthcare field. Nancy made an indelible impact as a respected and innovative leader who shaped the future of healthcare, always prioritizing the well-being of patients and the growth of the communities she served.

As a devoted Methodist, Nancy Stamey's faith was a cornerstone of her life. Nancy was a faithful member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church where she served others through volunteer work and her participation in various bible study groups.  Her unwavering belief in God's love and grace inspired those around her, and she found strength in her relationship with Christ, which she carried into every aspect of her life.

As an aunt, Nancy was a constant source of love and encouragement. Her nurturing spirit and joyful presence created cherished memories for her nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her encouragement, her wisdom, and the deep love and support she gave to her family.

Nancy is survived by her nephew Russ (Leslie) and niece Natalie and their children Sarah (Garrett), Lee, Jackson (Diana), Gabriella, and Sophie and their mother Fran Stamey; stepdaughter Lori (Chris) Cole, and her children Chandler and Aubrey. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rose Ellen Stamey, and her brother Henry (Fran).

A funeral service will be held Sunday, March 2 at 2:00 at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina with a reception to follow. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Nancy's life and the profound impact she had on all who knew her. This service will also be livestreamed using the link: https://www.hbumc.org/live .

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation, of which Nancy was a patron. She spent her life cultivating a deep appreciation for creativity, beauty, and expression in all its forms.

We will forever remember Nancy for her remarkable leadership, unwavering faith, and the deep love she poured into her family and community. She will be deeply missed and always in our hearts.
