Nancy Waring (née Plum), a loving mother, sister, friend, and Nana, passed away peacefully in her Chicago home on December 15, 2025, at the age of 72.

Nancy grew up in West Virginia, where her lifelong love of learning first took root. She earned her undergraduate degree from West Virginia University and later received her master’s degree from Cornell University.

Her life was defined by a sense of adventure and a willingness to embrace new horizons. After beginning her family life in Schenectady, New York, and Salem, Virginia, Nancy’s journey took her across the globe to Hong Kong, and eventually back to the United States to Barrington, Illinois, where she raised her three daughters with her then husband, David. An intrepid traveler, she explored 48 states and continued her adventures well into her later years, trekking to Machu Picchu and journeying through Spain. In 2016, she settled in the city of Chicago to be close to her children and grandchildren.

Nancy spent her free time home studying geography and history and playing Jeopardy!, a game she enjoyed for both the challenge and the joy of discovery. She was a constant reader with a lifelong love for mystery novels, a passion that began in childhood with Nancy Drew. Nancy also loved baking and was well known for her sweet treats - and her attempts to adapt them to be healthier without sacrificing flavor.

She enjoyed long walks, often stretching six miles, and frequently traveled back to her hometown of Williamstown, West Virginia, to cherish time with dear friends. She also delighted in secondhand shopping, finding great pleasure in a good bargain and flooding her family with next year’s clothing options.

Nancy was the devoted mother of three daughters: Elizabeth, Alexandra (Ted), and Victoria (Christopher). She was the cherished Nana to Amelia, Elsie, and Vivian, who brought her immense joy and pride.
Nancy will be remembered for her intelligence, curiosity, and deep love for her family. Their lives are a testament to her warmth and enthusiasm.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Forest and Maxine Plum, and she joins them - along with her beloved Alex Trebek - in peace.

The family is celebrating Nancy’s life and memories privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Virginia University.
