Nancy Whiteside Obituary

Nancy Arlene Whiteside, affectionately known as "Memaw," passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the age of 80. Born on July 1, 1945, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Nancy leaves behind a profound legacy of love, faith, and devotion that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Nancy lived a life devoted to her family as a stay-at-home mom and a military wife-roles in which she excelled with unwavering strength, compassion, and grace. Throughout her husband's military career, their travels took them to various parts of the world, yet Nancy ensured that their home was always a haven of comfort, stability, and unconditional love.

She was a woman of deep faith who loved the Lord with all her heart. Nancy was a devoted and active member of Landstown Community Church, where she served as the Sunday School Superintendent, leading and nurturing the spiritual growth of countless children and families. She was also a Den Mother-not only to her own children but to many others-offering guidance, support, and care to everyone she welcomed into her heart and home. Her nurturing spirit extended far beyond her immediate family, and many found in her a second mother, mentor, or friend.

Nancy found joy in the simple pleasures of life and loved sharing them with those around her. She was a loyal NASCAR fan, especially of Bill and Chase Elliott, and a passionate supporter of the Washington Redskins. Her competitive spirit came alive in online Big Fish Gaming matches, and she rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy!

Christmas was her favorite time of year, when she transformed her home into a warm, festive haven filled with the smell of delicious food, the sparkle of decorations, and the laughter of loved ones. Her joyful holiday spirit brought her entire family together year after year.

Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Myrtle Helmick, and her dear grandson, Joshua Todd Whiteside. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Walter Whiteside, who stood faithfully by her side through every season of life; her children, Michael Whiteside (Angela), Raymond Whiteside, and Gerry Whiteside (Renu); her grandchildren, Karissa (Nic), Jonathan (Jordan), Raymond Bruce (Susan), Justin, and Austin; and her great-grandchildren, Marceline, Isak, Lily, Roan, Julianna and Lucia. Nancy also leaves behind many extended family members, church family, and lifelong friends who will forever cherish her memory.

A visitation to honor and celebrate Nancy's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, August 9, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home – Southside Chapel.

Nancy's life was a beautiful testament to love, faith, resilience, and the enduring strength of family. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit continues to live on in the hearts of all she touched. May we carry forward her legacy by living with the same kindness, faith, and joy that Memaw so generously shared with the world.
