Nancy W. Wilkins, 99, of Peterstown, WV, passed away peacefully at Friendship Health &
Rehab Center in Roanoke, VA on Friday, January 10, 2025. Nancy was born in Falls Mills, VA,
on September 15, 1925, to Robert and Sally Davidson Wimmer. She was proud of her family
history. Both of her parents were born in the 1890s, and prior generations can be traced in the
United States back to the 1700s. Nancy was born just six years after her dad returned from
WWI. She proudly found a letter to her dad from the famous General John Pershing. She
started life without electricity, running water or so many other modern inventions. She lived
through the Great Depression, went to school during World War II and supported the war effort.
And that was just the beginning. She led a life full of meaning.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Robert Wilkins, and
sisters LeeAnna Dunn, Hazel Wimmer and Lorraine Addison. She is mourned by her four sons:
Gary and Sidney, both of Peterstown, WV; Louis of Woodbridge, VA, and Robert of Annandale,
VA. She is also survived by a granddaughter Samantha; five grandsons Andrew, Kyle, Cory, Bobby and Jeffery two great-grandsons Julian and Owen and two great-granddaughters Hailey and Marlena.
Nancy was a graduate of Graham High School, after which she attended Mary Washington
College in Fredericksburg, VA. She later graduated from McLain's Business College in 1946 in
Bluefield, WV. She met her husband, Robert, in Washington, D.C. in the early 1950s while she
was working at Lerner's Department Store. After their marriage, they moved around the United
States during his career with the United States Marine Corps, while growing their family. Nancy
served our country during her own 35 year career in the US Civil Service that spanned all
branches of the Department of Defense, while working for numerous high ranking officers
including the US Army Chief of Staff. After her retirement, she continued to work in private
security, always looking to support her family and be productive.
At home, Nancy was never idle. She was a beekeeper, gardener and crochet artist. Although
she tried to pass down the recipe for her wonderful buttermilk rolls, no one could ever quite
equal hers. She was full of spirit, had a good sense of humor and a gracious, beautiful smile.
She lived a life of faith. One of her favorite expressions was to say that she "had the greatest of
plenty", which demonstrated her thankfulness for life. Nancy experienced serious medical
challenges during her long life, and faced them with grace and fortitude. She knew no other way.
Visitation is at Wickline Funeral Home Thursday January 16 from 4-6 pm. Graveside services
will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Peterstown Cemetery, with Pastor Mike
Biggs officiating. Burial beside her late husband Robert will follow.
