Nancy Wittwer, Falls City, NE, passed away at the age of 77 in Sioux City, IA after complications from an abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. She was born on September 10, 1945, in Olympia, WA, to Charles and Frances Peck Fellows. She grew up in Sioux Falls, SD, graduating from Washington High School in 1963. She spent one year at Northwestern University and then finished her B.A. in Journalism and Sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After graduating college in 1967, she married Joe Wittwer and later divorced. She earned her master’s degree in educational administration and certification in library media. Nancy’s career as a teacher and eventually the library media specialist in Falls City spanned across 40 years. She left a wonderful legacy of inspiring so many children over the years with her love of literature and her ability to make a story come alive. Nancy was involved in the Richardson County Arts and Humanities Council and the American Contract Bridge League. In January 1989 she was appointed to the National Goodwill Committee of ACBL. She helped found the original Falls City Duplicate Bridge Club. She was the president for four years of District 14 bridge players covering five states. Nancy attained an Emerald Life Master ranking within the ACBL and was 400 points away from becoming a Platinum Life Master.
Nancy’s insatiable curiosity for the wonderment of the world enabled her to live a life enriched with travel, family, friendship, and her true passion for duplicate bridge. Nancy’s vibrant and gregarious disposition allowed her to connect with people anytime, anywhere. She never met a stranger. Nancy was a voracious reader and had an endearing ability to tell a complete story, full of multi-layer details and tangents.
Nancy’s fun spirit, zest for life and gift for conversation will continue to shine in the memories of everyone she touched.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jim Fellows. Left to cherish her memory are her three children: son Jared Wittwer of Ferrelview, MO, daughter Kristin (Spencer) Burke and grandchildren Sloane and Graham of Kansas City, MO, Ashley (Jeff) Armstrong and grandchildren Brooks, Elyse and Owen of Red Cloud, NE, and brother Scott (Linda) Fellows of Phoenix, AZ.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., August 12, 2023, at the Elks Club in Falls City, NE. Her Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 10, 2023, at the Calvary Episcopal Cathedral in Sioux Falls, SD. Inurnment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery at 9:00 a.m. Monday, September 11th, 2023. Nancy was a very special friend for many years. We will miss her so much. It has been a sad time with her passing. She stayed with us for many bridge events and her bed will now be empty . What wonderful memories we have now and forever of our times together.
