Naoyo J. Shah, age 84, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2024. Her life was marked by quiet strength, bold adventures, and a deep care for those around her.
She was born April 23, 1940 in Tokyo, Japan, to Tetsuo and Hiroko Takata. During her high school years, her family moved away from Tokyo, and despite the distance, Naoyo continued attending a prestigious girls' high school, living with her aunt. After graduating high school, Naoyo traveled to Brazil, where she worked as a sales clerk. On her return voyage to Japan, Naoyo formed a lifelong friendship with a fellow traveler who introduced her to opportunities in Chicago. This pivotal connection led her to the United States.
Once in the US, Naoyo spent a year learning English while staying with a host family. She later earned a Bachelor's degree in Art from Northern Illinois University. Naoyo's professional career was diverse. She began her career at Aurex Corporation, where she met her future husband Jayprakash. She later worked at Nissei Sangyo Company and Kintetsu World Express, and even started her own company called Macro Graphics.
Naoyo's marriage brought her into the vibrant world of Indian culture, where she blended seamlessly, embracing new traditions and fostering deep bonds with her husband's friends. Her Thanksgiving celebrations became legendary as she welcomed 80 people to her house with warmth and joy. She traveled the globe and the US with her husband, visiting all 50 states.
Naoyo found her greatest joy when she became a mother and later a grandmother. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her son and granddaughters. She especially loved listening to their music performances, cheering for them at athletic events, and teaching them to cook.
Naoyo is survived by her husband of 47 years, Jayprakash Shah; her son Rajul (Molly) Shah; her grandchildren Mia & Sydney; and her siblings: Shinichi Takata, Keizo Takata, and Kazuyo Yamaguchi. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Yasuhude Takata, and her sister Masayo Tsuchiya.
Services will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Chicago Center for Music Education at https://www.chimemusic.org/donate.html.
