Nate was born September 3, 1947. He passed away peacefully October 23, 2025, after battling hard for 4 months to recover from an unexpected illness.
He was raised in Hertford, NC, the son of the late Jack and Mary Brinn. He is survived by his wife Jill, their daughters Madison and Mackenzie; his children Dr. Nathan A. (Melissa), Ian, Sara Luckmann (Clark) from his first marriage to Susan, and his brother Jack. He was an uncle to many nephews, a niece, their children and significant others.
His enjoyment of woodworking, gardening, and cooking were born out of his time spent growing up on his family farm.
Nate also had a passion for the field of histotechnology. His early career was spent at the Duke University Medical Center culminating in his appointment as the Pathology Laboratory Manager. However, anyone who knew him understood his unwavering love for the University of North Carolina basketball team. He was a lifelong fan and an avid ABD “anybody but Duke” supporter. Nate moved over to the business marketing side when he joined Cambridge Instruments in 1987. He helped “pioneer’ microwave staining and presented numerous workshops at the National Society for Histotechnology. He continued his career in medical device instrumentation at Leica Microsystems, Richard Allen Scientific, and Surgipath Medical industries beginning as an applications manager and working his way to Vice President of Marketing.
Nate was known for his sense of humor, hearty laugh, being a friend and mentor to so many, his use of acronyms for any situation, playfully “giving the bird”, his bread, beer, and wings, annual Christmas beignets and eggnog; and, in his retirement, being the neighbor who persevered through his physical ailments to engage in conversation and laughs with all who met him on his walks or while sitting in his chair in front of the house.
Donations may be made in his name to Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter.
