Nathaniel A. Given Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 1, 2007.
Nathaniel A. Given's 6-foot-4 frame proved useful for the Army's needs, which were not altogether to his own liking. "He would complain to me: 'Dad, how come you made me so big? They make me carry the big weapons,'" Scott Given said. Given, 21, of Dickinson, Texas, was killed Dec. 27 when his convoy was ambushed outside of Baghdad. He was assigned to Fort Drum. After dropping out of high school his junior year, Nathan found work at the same chemical plant his dad works for. But it just wasn't right for him. "He was frustrated because he couldn't find his niche," Scott Given said. Enlisting was the answer for a happy-go-lucky guy his dad described as a man who loved kids and "anything with big tires on it." Nathan, who wanted to become a police officer, made it a point to join his dad, a Shriner, for toy drives every year. He also asked his family for extra boxes of candy, which he would hand out to children in Iraq. "He would have been a great, great father," Scott Given said, choking back tears. "He was so great with kids." He also is survived by his mother, Donna.

THE SPIRIT OF MY SOLDIER

I FEEL THE SPIRIT OF MY SOLDIER ALL AROUND MY HOME
IT COMFORTS ME TO FEEL I AM NOT ALONE
HIS SPIRIT MAKES ME WONDER OF THE REASON FOR HIS LOSS
THEN IT TAKES ME TO JESUS ON THE CROSS
JESUS SUFFERED AS MY SON AND BRAVELY STOOD UP TALL
WANTING PEACE FOR EVERYONE AND SACRIFICED HIS ALL
THIS IS WHERE MY SON PROUDLY WISHED TO BE
TO PRAY FOR HIM AND GUIDE HIM IS SOULY UP TO ME
MY SON NEEDING ME TO SUPPORT HIM AT THIS TIME
FOR GOD GAVE HIM THE CHOICE TO GO AND THAT CHOICE WAS NOT MINE
THE DAY THEY CAME TO MY DOOR TO SADLY BRING THE NEW
I COLLAPSED ONTO THE FLOOR AND COULD NOT EVEN MOVE
MY GRIEF WAS HEAVY I HAD CEASED TO BREATHE
MY LITTLE BABY BOY WAS GONE WHY GOD WASN'T IT ME?
OH WHAT A PRIVILEGE IT IS TO HAVE KNOWN MY SON
A HERO IN MY HEART AND FOR EVERYONE
THE CHILDREN IN IRAQ WILL MISS HIS FRIENDLY TOUCH
FOR IF HE'D HAD HIS VERY OWN THEY'D OF LOVED HIM JUST AS MUCH
THE LITTLE TOUCHES LEFT BEHIND THE LAST TIME HE WAS HERE
WILL GRACE OUR LOVING HOME WITH LAUGHTER AND SOME TEARS
THE DAY IS SOMBER NOW THE SUN WILL SET REAL SOON MY SON IS IN THE HANDS OF GOD THEY FIXED HIM UP A ROOM
I FEEL A GENTLE TOUCH WHEN I'M ALL ALONE
I FEEL THE SPIRIT OF MY SOLDIER MY SON HAS COME ON HOME

UNTIL WE RIDE AGAIN

THE WIND WISPS ACROSS THE CHIMES
AND GENTLY PAST MY FACE
AND BLOWS ACROSS THE GREEN OAK TREES
AND UPON THE SHIMMERING LAKES
IT CARRIES THE LEAVES AS IF THEY'RE SAILING
THROUGH THE SKY SO BLUE
AND CARESSES MY SWEET MEMORIES
AND BRINGS ME THOUGHTS OF YOU
I CAN SEE YOUR BEAUTIFUL SMILE
AND YOUR HANDSOME FACE
AND THANK GOD IN HEAVEN THAT OUR LIVES
AND HEARTS YOU TRULY GRACED
I FEEL THE BREEZE UPON MY FACE LIKE WHEN WE USE TO RIDE
WE SEE THE COLORS WAVING STRONG
AND IT FILLS OUR HEARTS WITH PRIDE
FOR THE NEXT TIME THAT WE SEE YOU
AND WE'RE HOME AGAIN
WE WILL RIDE HEAVENS HIGHWAYS
SIDE BY SIDE
MY DAD, MY HERO, MY FRIEND

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Nathaniel, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Nate,
Im sorry we lived so far away from oneanother I9 wish I could have gotten to know you better and have been able to have been a better Cousin to you. I thank God for the time we did get to spend with one another when we were younger. Nate do you remember when I came down from Florida to visit Grandma for the summer, when you all used to live three houses down from Grandma, and the first day I got there we were playing outside then we went into the house and uncle Mike was sleeping on the couch and I picked up the empty Pringles can and held It next to Uncle Mikes ear and slammed my hand down on the can to make it "POP" real loud and it scared the crap out of Uncle Mike and he sat up like a snake bit him and we just sat there laughing as hard as we could and the more Uncle Mike got mad the harder we laughed. Nate I wish I could go back to that day and tell you how much I loved you. Thank you for being my HERO. Thank you for your sacrifice of life for OUR COUNTRY. Thank you for being my COUSIN.
I Love and Miss you,

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

The price this Brave Young Soldier and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten.
There is so much thanks to be given, to these young heroes, for their Courage, Dedication and Service.

May Nathaniel rest safely in God's Care and may God's Loving Peace and Comfort be with the Given family.
