Nathaniel Sumter was born February 20, 1956, in Richland County, South Carolina. He was the beloved son of the late Author and Lucy Murray Sumter. He departed this life to be with the Lord on Monday, April 4, 2022 at OPUS Post Acute Rehabilitation Center, in West Columbia, South Carolina.
"Tank," as he was affectionally called by family and friends, was educated in the public schools of Richland County. After graduating high school, Nathaniel relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where he attended Art and Graphic Design School. Upon completing his training, he became an extraordinary artist and painter. He was known for his creative drawings and paintings of Martin Luther King, Jesus Christ, family members and many others. His gift was one that was truly from God. Tank also worked in construction for many years before his health declined.
He was a loving and caring father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be missed by all who loved and knew him.
Mr. Sumter was also preceded in death by his brothers, Willie Lee, Richard Sumter, and Leon Sumter; and his sisters, Lucy Mae Pressley, Janie White, and Betty Williams.
Those who will forever cherish his fond and precious memories are his daughter, Joy Sumter of Bishopville, South Carolina; his loving sisters, Ruby Pressley of Eastover, South Carolina; and Shirley Reed of Irmo, South Carolina; one grandson, Isiah Sumter; and a granddaughter, Zariah Sumter, both of Bishopville, South Carolina; a special niece, Janice Pressley Jackson of Hopkins, South Carolina; a host of nephews, nieces and other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss him.
