Nayden Mintchev, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on January 26, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on February 2, 1951, in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, to Todora and Ivan, Nayden lived a life shaped by curiosity, determination, and a deep appreciation for the world around him.
From an early age, Nayden was drawn to the sky. Aviation became his greatest passion and lifelong pursuit. After completing pilot training, he built a remarkable 30-year career in commercial aviation, eventually earning the rank of Captain, the highest honor in his profession. For the final 20 years of his career, he proudly served as captain, guiding thousands of passengers safely to their destinations and earning the respect and trust of colleagues along the way.
Nayden's love for nature began in childhood while growing up in the mountains of Koprivshtitsa, Bulgaria. He found joy in hiking, traveling, and exploring new places. As an avid photographer, he captured the landscapes he loved, preserving moments of beauty that reflected his connection to nature.
During his travels, Nayden discovered the Adirondacks, a place that immediately felt like home. Drawn to its forests, quiet beauty, and strong sense of community, he chose to settle there, where he spent the later years of his life surrounded by the wilderness he cherished.
Nayden is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Katia, his loving son, Orlin, and his cherished daughter, Elitza. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, adventurous spirit, and the love he shared so generously with his family and friends.
To honor Nayden's passion for nature and his love for the Adirondack wilderness, the family asks that memorial donations be made in lieu of flowers to Adirondack Wild: Friends of the Forest Preserve:
