Neal Sipe Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 29, 2026.
Neal A Sipe, longtime resident of Lutherville, beloved companion of Julie Wernz; father of Martha Sipe and spouse Tricia; and Ellen Sipe Bullinger; loving grandfather of Matthew Bullinger; died peacefully on Tuesday, January 27th. He was predeceased by wife of 57 years, Leesa L Sipe. Mr. Sipe was the band director at Towson High School for 30 years. He continued to celebrate his love of music by performing with the Middle River Concert Band and the Chesapeake Concert Band. He also marched and played the tuba with the Maryland Defense Force Band after completing boot camp at age 60. After retirement from teaching, he worked at a Chevrolet dealership in the parts department, from which he also retired. He was a faithful volunteer at the Cardiac Care Unit of St. Joseph's Medical Center after recovering from a heart attack. He was a dedicated member of St. John's United Methodist Church (Lutherville) where he served on multiple committees and sang in the choir. Neal will be missed by his family, friends, and former students.

The family will receive friends at St. John's UMC, 216 W Seminary Ave (21093) on Friday, February 6 from 11:00 to 12:00 when a memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to support The Sandra R Berman Heart Institute of the University of Maryland, St. Joseph's Medical Center Foundation via Make a Donation | UM St. Joseph Medical Center

Let the muffled drum roll, but end with a gentle tap, for one who has been among us for far too short a time

I had the pleasure of knowing Neal for many years through our mutual love of music and playing the tuba in several ensembles. He was a fine gentleman and was good natured. He enjoyed bringing his newest tuba to rehearsals (there were many) with a big smile. He was marching with the Maryland Defense Force Band with a heavy tuba strung over his shoulders well past the age of 60 and never complaining when the pavement was well over 100 degrees. I was delighted when he met his lady friend after his wife passed. Neal had a joy of life that I admired.

Mr. Sipe was one of the best teachers I ever had, at any level-and also one of the best coaches. He made us feel like we were a team; that we all belonged together. I will miss his love for all kinds of music, his sense of humor, and the leadership he showed us. I hope it will help the family to know that hundreds of us will remember him with fondness and with gratitude.
