Neil Patrick "Mackey" McCollum, known to many as Pat, age 81, of Athens, Tennessee, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at his home.
Born on September 11, 1944, Pat proudly served his country as a U.S. Navy submariner during the Vietnam War, serving aboard the USS Windham County and the USS Chivo from 1964 to 1970. His time in the Navy instilled in him a lifelong sense of duty, honor, and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life.
Pat loved the simple joys of life - fishing on a quiet morning, tending to his garden, traveling to new places, and spending time at the local VFW among friends and fellow veterans.
He is survived by his beloved spousal equivalent, Joan Rourk; children Rebecca (Christopher) Jones, Traci McCollum, Clark (Elizabeth) McCollum, Elizabeth Toney, Jaimie Little, Brian (Kathy) Greenlaw, and Matthew (Amanda) Greenlaw; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family who will deeply miss his warmth, humor, and steady presence.
Pat was preceded in death by his mother, Audrey Bertram; stepfather, Otto Bertram; and brother, Pete McCollum.
Per his request, no services will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post in his honor.
Pat's life was defined by love, service, and loyalty - to his country, his family, and the things he cherished the most. His memory will remain a steady light for all who knew him.
You are invited to share a personal memory of Mackey and/or your condolences with his family at his online memorial located at www.companionfunerals.com. Companion Funeral Home of Athens and the Cody family are honored to assist the family with these arrangements.
