Nelda Metz Obituary

NELDA MARIE METZ, age 70 of Waseca died on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Waseca.

Born on August 16, 1954 in Willmar, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Verner and Elaine (Lietz) Johnson. She graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1972 and married John Metz on September 9, 1972 in Granite Falls. Following John’s military service, they moved to Waseca where she began working at the E.F. Johnson Co. While raising her children, she did home daycare and later began her career with the Waseca Public Schools working in a variety of roles. She held numerous summer and part time jobs over the years including at the VFW.

Nelda found joy in many hobbies, including playing and calling bingo at the VFW, gardening, and taking trips to the casino. She was a devoted grandmother who loved watching her grandchildren play sports and was an avid supporter of the Bluejays basketball team. Nelda enjoyed bike riding, puzzles, reality TV, and taking a drive around the lake. She had a passion for reading and treasured her many friendships. She enjoyed traveling especially her yearly trip to Arizona. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling, and throughout her life, she remained active and adventurous.

She is survived by her husband, John of Waseca; two daughters, Jodi (Curt Shoemake) Metz of Minneapolis, and Angela (Jason) Bohannon of Waseca; five grandchildren, Daniel Shoemake, Lauren Shoemake, Janelle Shoemake, Tate Bohannon, and Trey Bohannon; and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Gary (Linda) Johnson of Rogers; one sister, Donna (Todd) Rothenberger of Alexandria; two sisters-in-law, Susan Edwards of Milroy and Robin Metz of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Tyler Bohannon; brothers, Daniel, Luverne, and Robert Johnson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Deloris “Tootie” Metz; and brothers-in-law, Larry and Daniel Metz.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 24, 2025 from 4-7 PM at the State Street Chapel of Dennis-Steffel-Omtvedt Funeral and Cremation Service in Waseca.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca. Burial will follow at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca.
