Amazing, Beautiful, Brave, Caring, Distinguished, Generous, Incomparable, Kind, Loving, Protective, and Selfless These are just some of the words that describe our beloved Reina and mother – Nelida DeJesus Soto better known to many of us as Mama.
Mama was born on November 4th, 1939 in Camuy, Puerto Rico, into a very large and joyous family. She was a devoted daughter, sister, titi, grandmother, and fortunate to enjoy the role of great-grandmother. For certain, Mama was truly blessed.
In 1967, Mama went to Chicago to visit her brother. Being the faithful God fearing person that she was, she went to church and God blessed her with a husband, Casimiro Rodriguez, who after almost 50 years of marriage preceded her in death.
Together, they established in 1968 the Luquillo Barbershop in the heart of Paseo Boricua on Division Street - recognized in 2019 by the City of Chicago as the oldest established business and pillar of the Puerto Rican community. For over 50 years, she oversaw and supported the financial management of the business. Her commitment to Luquillo Barbershop helped grow it to what we know and love today. This is one of many testaments of Mama's dedication and legacy.
Her priority was always her family and she devoted her life to her children: Carmen, Jose (deceased), Jesse (deceased), David, Awilda, Noel, Raquel, and Osmar; and her 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Mama's deep faith in God and supportive teachings created a welcoming, nurturing, and positive home environment that she extended to anyone who walked through her door; so much so that friends would often call her mama. She took this as a compliment and never shied away from being there for others who needed a guiding hand, encouraging words, or a tasty home cooked Puerto Rican meal.
Mama, you were the foundation of our familia. You made us strong, resilient, and kind-hearted. God, we thank you for giving us such a wonderful mother, friend and for letting us have her present for so many years. Mama, we will always remember and cherish your warm hugs, cascade of kisses, giggly smiles, and tacitas de café. The special love you had for each one of us will live on through your descendants and all those who had the pleasure of knowing you. Te queremos con todas nuestras almas.
