AIKEN, SC – MARY CARNELL “NELL” DERRICK BERRIE, 93, beloved wife of William Paul Berrie, passed away Sunday morning, March 6, 2022 in her home.
A native of Gilbert, SC, Nell lost her mother, Sarah Bysinger Derrick, at a young age. She grew up in Lexington County. She attended cosmetology school in Columbia and moved to Aiken when she was 17 years old in 1945. She worked as a hairdresser at Elite Beauty Shop on Laurens Street before opening her own shop “Nell’s Beauty Shop”. She and William were married April 6, 1947, in the Old St. John’s United Methodist Church. She was a longtime member of St. John’s where she was a member of the Katie Williams Sunday School Class, the Quilting Club and volunteered in the kitchen. Nell was a member of the Business & Professional Women’s Club and Pilot Club. She was a loving wife and mother and loved sewing, knitting and baking blue ribbon pound cakes.
Surviving, in addition to William, her husband of almost 75 years, are her children, Deborah Berrie Coriarty, Columbia, Paula Berrie Clayton (Barry), Aiken, William Ernest Berrie, Aiken, Mary Berrie Daniels (Dr. Larry Daniels), Aiken; grandchildren, William Shawn Harvey (Britney), Michael Berrie Harvey (Jessica), Hope Elizabeth Cornelius, Sarah Coriarty Crisostomo (R.C.); great-grandchildren, Jared Harvey, Jayden Harvey, Jayse Harvey, BaiLee Harvey, GraiCee Harvey; in addition to her mother, Nell was preceded in death by her brothers, Julius and Cecil and sisters, Sarah, Willie and Annette.
The family would like to extend the thanks and appreciation to Always Caring Caregivers and Kindred Hospice.
The funeral service will be held Sunday afternoon, March 13th at 2 o’clock from the graveside in Historic Bethany Cemetery with The Rev. Grayson “Butch” Blackwell officiating.
