Nell Christine Freye of Wausau passed away suddenly at her home on February 23, 2026. She was 76 years old.
Nell was born on March 13, 1949 in Antigo to the late Dr. Guy and Mae (Morgan) Portman. She graduated from Antigo High School, class of 1967. She received her bachelor’s degree from UW Oshkosh and went on to receive a master’s degree in psychology from UW Stout. In addition to being a dedicated homemaker, Nell worked as a counselor in Wausau. She also worked at Barnes and Noble for several years. While living in Antigo, she and her sister Sally owned and operated the original Woodland House.
Nell enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and a good cup of coffee. She loved movies and British TV series. She was known as a caring person who lived a life of service. She was faithful and devoted to her Catholic faith. She treasured time spent with her grandkids, Ana and Addison, also known as her two A’s.
Nell is survived by her children Lindsay Freye (husband Paul Vanderbloeman) of DeForest and Dominic Freye (significant other Amber Duberstein) of Wausau, former husband Phil Freye, grandchildren Addison Vanderbloeman and Ana Freye, sisters Sheila (Chuck) Huhn, Sally Jansen, brother Raymond Portman, and sister-in-law Willa Portman.
In addition to her parents, Nell was preceded in death by her son Damian D. Freye, sisters Patsy Portman, Connie Portman, Jean (Harlan) Marsh, Joan (David) Schlieman, Katie (John) Gehring, brother Dr. Thomas Portman, brother-in-law James Jansen, sister-in-law Patricia Portman, and nephews Johnny and Guy Gehring.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at 11:30 AM at Strasser-Roller Funeral Home with Father Charles Hoffman officiating. Visitation will take place on Monday at the funeral home from 4:00 to 7:00 PM and again on Tuesday prior to the service from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Burial will follow the service at Queen of Peace Cemetery.
