Nellie Wofford Braxton, of Morehead City, NC, passed away peacefully at 4 a.m. on March 13, 2026, at the age of 97.
A graveside service to honor Nell’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 21 at Gethsemane Memorial Park in Newport. The family will receive friends one hour prior.
Nell was born on January 8, 1929, to the late Charles and Maude Bivins Wofford in Davie County, NC. She grew up with lots of cousins and family close by. During high school she enjoyed playing and traveling with her high school basketball team.
After high school she moved to Washington DC to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. While there she made lifelong friends that she maintained contact with throughout the years. Nell attended FBI reunions on the eastern seaboard.
Nell enjoyed traveling, especially when there was a historical site to see. Nell was an avid reader and stayed on top of current events, politics, and weather. She loved to shop mainly for food which she generously gave away. Nell was extremely generous with family and friends, always ready to help others. She enjoyed First Baptist Church in Morehead City and many of the activities offered there.
Surviving relatives are her grandson, Trey Creech (Tori); granddaughters, Kristy Creech Wells (Todd), and Stacy Creech Gandini (Michael); and great grandchildren, Madeline and Thomas Creech; Sara, Emma, and Alec Gandini; and Gavin Wells.
In addition to her parents, Nell was predeceased by her husband, Earl Braxton; sisters, Gail Castelloe, Peggy Hellard, and Betty Sue Wofford; brother Charles Wofford; and daughter Nelda Creech.
In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Nell’s love for basketball, donations are welcome to Upward Basketball at First Baptist Church 810 Bridges St., Morehead City, NC 28557.
