Nellie Mae Iuvale died at home, surrounded by family members on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at the age of 100 years old. She was born on April 7, 1925, on the family farm, which was half a mile north and a quarter mile west of the Comanche Tribal Complex.
She rode horses to school and town. She learned to hunt and fish along Cache Creek and in the Wichita Mountains. She was a very good shot.
She attended Lawton High School. At the outbreak of World War II, she worked at Ft. Sill. In the 1950s, she would colorize black and white photos for people.
She was a military wife for 22 years. She married Tufa Iuvale. Nellie moved to Oklahoma in 1979. She had her new house built in 1984, in Elgin, Oklahoma.
Nellie is survived by one sister, five children, and a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren who will carry forward her legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering spirit.
She had a gift for making people feel welcome, whether through heartfelt conversations, her contagious laughter, or a piece of her famous peanut brittle. She was known as "The Lady in the Pink Hat." She wore it when selling homemade peanut brittle in towns within a 150-mile radius of Elgin.
Her warmth, strength, and joyful soul will be forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Funeral service for Nellie will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Elgin Funeral Homel in Elgin, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Celestial Gardens in Cyril, Oklahoma, under the direction of Elgin Funeral Home. Visitation will take place on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
