Nelson R. Kurtz

Nelson Roy Kurtz was born in Oregon, Missouri on October 20, 1932. He was one of three children of Roy Matthew and Emma Ada (Stadler) Kurtz.
Nelson graduated from Oregon High School and then entered the United States Navy. He completed his service in 1954.
On September 28, 1957 he married Verda H. Hotzel in St. Joseph, Missouri. They made their home in both Oregon and Forest City, and became parents of five children. Nelson worked for the City of Oregon as the Superintendent of Utilities.
Nelson passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at the Oregon Care Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Mary Alice Pierpoint.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Verda, of their Oregon home; children, Julie Kieser of St. Joseph, Missouri, David (Lora), John (Julie) and Paul (Theresa), all of Platte City, Missouri, and Carla Acton of Forest City; sister, Anna Lou Doebbeling of Oregon; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Kieser, Ashley (Zach) Lawler, Lauren Kurtz, Jack Kurtz, Julia Kurtz, Levi (Megan) Acton, Chelsea (Brenten) Hughes, Jacob (Heather) Kurtz, and Jessica Kurtz; 10 great grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Norma and Joe Snapp, Nancy Hotzel and K.R. Pierpoint; and nieces and nephews.
Nelson was a member of the Harris E. Petree American Legion Post 190, V.F.W. and Fleet Reserve. He enjoyed gardening, K. C. Chiefs, going to the St. Joseph Casino, and his Thursday board meetings in St. Joseph.
Funeral services with military honors: Monday, March 27 2023, 11:00 am, Chamberlain Funeral Home, Oregon. Family will greet friends one hour prior to services. Private family inurnment: Maple Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers: Maple Grove Cemetery Association or the Holt County Museum & Research Center in Oregon.
