Nettie Jane Burney Horton also known as "Nana", age 75, of Bladenboro went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 15, 2022, while at Wesley Pines Assisted Living in Lumberton, NC. She was reunited with her parents, Webb Lonnie Burney and Isabelle Storms Burney, her devoted husband and best friend Douglas Horton and her four brothers Lonnie, Wright, Max, and Grady Burney. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Stephen Douglas Horton and wife Teresa of Bladenboro, daughter Jacqueline Horton Gooden and husband Randy of Bladenboro, two sisters Wanda Burney Singletary and husband Ronald of Bladenboro, Linda Burney Findley of Madison, GA, sister-in-law Catherine Hester Burney of Bladenboro, five grandchildren Candace Gooden Long (Matt), Stephen Colby Horton (Tina), Haley Maranda Gooden, Channing Trace Horton (Madison) and Camryn Isabella Horton, and five great grandchildren, Kylie Alana Long, William Abel Long, Lyla Reid Horton, Layken Reece Horton and Stephen Colby Horton Jr. aka “SJ”.
Nettie was a devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother, caregiver, and friend. She worked for many years for the Bank of Bladenboro, First Citizens Bank and Waccamaw Bank. She taught the Sunday School Preschool Class at her home church, Zion Hill Baptist Church in Bladenboro for 30 plus years. She enjoyed helping others, talking to folks, and never met a stranger no matter where she went. Nettie’s family was her life, being around the table with them sharing a meal and laughing made her heart happy. She taught them to love the Lord, to laugh often and love unconditionally. She will be missed for her selfless love, her beautiful smile, and her delicious red velvet cake.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm on Sunday, December 18th at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Bladenboro followed by a 2 pm funeral service with the Reverend Quentin Boyce and Reverend Warren Hill officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Bladenboro. At other times the family will be receiving friends at Nettie's home at 291 Cabbage Road, Bladenboro, NC.
