Nevual Gene Helms, affectionately known as "Gene" or "Mean Gene" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at his home in
Monroe, North Carolina, on March 8, 2026, with his loving daughter and son-in-law by his side. Born on June 5, 1944, in
Concord, North Carolina, Gene's life was a testament to the values of love, generosity, and selflessness that he embodied throughout his 81 years.
Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Faye Eudy Helms, who was his lifelong companion and best friend. He was also predeceased by his two sons, Buddy and Jimmy Helms; his parents, Jap Buren "JB" Helms and Mamie Threatt Helms; and his sister, Barbara Horne. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his daughter, Julie E. Brown and her husband Tim; his three grandsons, Chris Helms, Caleb Helms and his wife Kristen, and Bryson Haywood and his fiancé Brenna Ivester; his great-grandson, Harrison; his sister-in-law, Bonnie Manus; his niece, Pam Schrimpsher; his nephew, Lane Eudy; and his beloved grand-dog, Remi.
Gene's early years were spent at Benton Heights Elementary School, where he laid the foundation for a life of hard work and dedication. He went on to become a truck driver for Harris Teeter Distribution, a job he took great pride in and retired from after 14 years of service.
Outside of work, Gene had a passion for the simple pleasures in life. He loved spending time camping at the beach, where he found peace in the rhythm of the waves and joy in the company of his family. A fan of classic westerns, Gene could often be found relaxing in front of the TV, immersed in the tales of the old West. His yard was his pride and joy, and he took great satisfaction in mowing and maintaining it to perfection. Gene's favorite pastime, however, was taking leisurely drives, enjoying the beauty of the countryside and the freedom of the open road.
Gene's smile was infectious, and he was known for his impeccable hair, often jokingly warning, "Don't mess with my Jimmy Johnson hair!" His unique personality and generous spirit made him one of a kind, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
As we remember Gene, we are reminded of the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Gene's life was indeed a success, as he touched the hearts of many and made the world a better place with his loving and generous nature.
Gene Helms will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of kindness and selflessness will continue to inspire those he leaves behind. His was a life well-lived, full of moments that will be treasured by his family and friends forever.
