Nguyen Phuc Dang, 81, of Rochester, MN, died Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 12:37pm in his home surrounded by his family, loved ones, and close friends.
Nguyen was born January 1,1943 in Da Nang, Vietnam. In 1975, He went to North Vietnamese prison because he used to work for the South Vietnamese government before 1975 and got released in 1984.
He graduated with his Bachelor's degree in Vietnam and Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work with Magna Cum Laude from Mankato State University in 1995.
On July 28, 1973, he married Hanh Thi Luu in Saigon and Da Nang. The couple came to America in 1991 and lived in Mankato before moving to Rochester in 1997. He worked as a Social Worker for Olmsted County for 18 years before retiring in 2015. In 2018, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease which progressed into Lewy Body Dementia.
Nguyen loved serving his Vietnamese Catholic community where he was honored the Bishop's Medal in acknowledgement for his many years of dedicated, generous service at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Rochester, MN- Diocese of Winona-Rochester.
While serving his community, he thrived on organizing events for Vietnamese New Years, being the MC for Vietnamese weddings, fishing, and especially dancing.
He is survived by his wife, Hanh Thi Luu of Rochester, MN, and children: son, Anh Phuc Dang of Colorado and daughter, Thienly Dang of Blaine, MN, four grandchildren: Elizabeth, James, Tia, and Taya, and his siblings who are still in Vietnam: older sister Dang Thi Tra and her children and grandkids; younger brother Dang Phuc Tuu and his wife, children, grandkids; younger sister Dang Thi Thu Mai and her husband, children and grandkids; younger sister Dang Thi Sen and her husband, children, and grandkids, and younger sister Dang Thi Hoa and her husband, children, and grandkids.
He was a good husband, father, son, friend, and an inspiration to everyone in the Vietnamese community.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2024, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. A visitation will be held from 4:00pm-8:00pm on Friday, November 29, 2024, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to Mass on Saturday at the church. His cremains will be in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester, MN.
