Nicholas Gregoris Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mastapeter Memorial Home, Inc. on Aug. 22, 2024.
The Reverend Nicholas L. Gregoris
Reverend Nicholas L. Gregoris, 52, of Pine Beach passed away unexpectedly on August 21,2024. Father Gregoris was born on July 26,1972 in New York City, where he attended parochial elementary and secondary schools. He did his seminary studies at Seton Hall University, receiving a BA degree (magna cum laude) in Classical Languages in 1992 and at the Pontifical Gregorian University, earning his STB degree there (magna cum laude) in 1995. He was one of the founders of the Diocesan Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania (now reconstituted as the Priestly Society of St. John Henry Cardinal Newman). He was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood on May 26, 1997, at the Cathedral of Saint Peter in the Diocese of Scranton. Following ordination to the priesthood, he was assigned to teach theology full-time at Notre Dame High School in East Stroudsburg and did parochial work on weekends at Our Lady of Victory Church in Tannersville, Pennsylvania.
Father Gregoris was reassigned to Rome in the Fall of 1998 to complete his graduate studies, receiving the licentiate of sacred theology at the Pontificia Facoltà Theologica Marianum in June of 1999 (summa cum laude). An alumnus of the Pontifical North American College, his particular area of study and the topic of his thesis concerned the Mariology of Cardinal Newman, which work he developed in greater depth for his doctorate, which he received from the Marianum (summa cum laude) in June of 2001. In July of 2002, Father Gregoris became an Assistant Professor at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in theology and Latin. Subsequently, he became the first full-time chaplain at Wyoming Catholic College. Later, he served at the Church of Saint Andrew in Downtown Manhattan, which provides sacramental ministry to the judicial community.
A special area of interest for him is the Sacred Liturgy and relations with the Eastern Churches, as reflected in his possession of faculties to celebrate in the Byzantine Rite.
He has published numerous articles in the Catholic Press [Our Sunday Visitor, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, The Catholic Answer, National Catholic Register, l'Osservatore Romano(English Edition)] and has been accredited to the Vatican Press Corps. He is the managing editor of The Catholic Response, the author of one book, and the translator of two. He conducts lectures and workshops on a variety of topics for Religious and laity alike. He has hosted a weekly radio program entitled, "The Truth About Mary," was a research consultant for the national organization Priests for Life, and for the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He has competency in Latin and Greek, as well as in the following modern languages [in order of fluency]: Italian, Spanish and French. Most recently he earned a second doctorate in Catholic school administration from Pontifex University.
Viewing and Mass will be held on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 3:00 pm at Shrine and Parish Church of The Holy Innocents, 128 West 37th Street, New York, NY 10018. Tuesday, August 27, 2024 will be a burial at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, 62 Cedar Grove Road, Toms River, NJ time will be announced. I did know about Fr. Nicholas Gregoris´ passing until I met his father in the elevator a few days ago. I was shocked to hear the news.

Nicholas grew up in my building. He was always a cheerful and friendly boy. My father told me that Nicholas (he was around 10 years old) saw him and my mom sitting a neighborhood park. Nicholas started a conversation with them and then offered to buy them each a hot dog from the stand. This showed that Nicolas had a kind and generous heart at a young age. I have not seen him for many years until one day I ran into him in front of St. Andrew Church in NYC. He asked and blessed my parents who had pass already. We stayed in contact by holiday texting. He is such a fine and thoughtful person. He will be missed. I know he is in peace with God, and he will be remembered by all the lives he had touched. I am thankful to had known Fr. Nicholas Gregoris as a friend.

Fr Nicholas was an inspiring, courageous, honest and faithful priest.

He was instrumental in encouraging my return to the practice of my cradle faith and his teachings were brave and honest. He had the `misfortune´ of having to hear my confession after my 35 year hiatus from my faith and responded in patience, mercy and love.

I´ve thought of him often and tracked his priestly adventures thru the years since our meetings at daily Mass at St Andrew´s in lower Manhattan.

Fr Nick is a loyal son of our Church and a brave and faithful servant of our Lord Jesus Christ. Good job Father- enjoy your well deserved reward in the arms of Jesus and His beloved Mother.

God has created us to go to Paradise (Heaven). That the end of life is not life but that life is a preparation for eternity. Death is only the gateway for getting there. San Padre Pio

Fr. Nicholas was an entertaining contrast as chaplain in our small, rural town. I remember him wearing his leather shoes up in the mountains of Wyoming on a visit with Nancy up to Louis Lake. He took photos of my friend's self-made truck-camper while we were changing out a flat to show to people back home. He recounted one day how he had recently broken up an almost fight at the local bar with his priestly presence by wearing a cassock while looking for food at 10pm! (He could never get over how quiet it gets in the evenings here).

I will always gratefully recall his energetic bi-ritual priestly service: it was a combo of ordinary, extraordinary and Byzantine calendars which resulted in repeat and skipped feasts for him! I am especially indebted because Fr. Nicholas offered Mass for me when I was in labor with my first child and it gave me so much confidence and strength to be so united to Christ in those moments.

We have had Byzantine services at Wyoming Catholic College since his time here and I am so grateful for his role in that legacy.

With the Blessed Mother in these Marian days of her Dormition/Assumption, rest in peace, Fr. Gregoris.
