Words of Love and Remembrance for Nicholas Leifur Helgason
Nicholas Leifur Helgason, a beloved member of our community, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025. Nick was born to Hilmar and Christy Helgason on February 22, 1988, following his three siblings Bobby, Brittany, and Jordon. Nick grew up working on his family farm, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep connection to the land. Starting at just 9 years old, Nick embodied a love of racing, a passion he shared with his brother, Bobby.
Known for throwing the biggest parties, loving the loudest music, and always doing everything over the top, Nick had a unique ability to take the most ordinary things and make them extraordinary. He had a knack for fixing anything and everything and took great joy in the Dodge he refurbished himself. Nick enjoyed being on the water and was more than a little excited about building his home on the Marshyhope Creek for his family. He had big plans to make the Nanticoke River better than the Choptank! He was always climbing, jumping, and tumbling, living his life to the fullest every single day. Nick had an infectious sense of humor and a laugh that was truly contagious. We will deeply miss his jokes and puns, wishing we could hear them for one more seventeenth time. Yet despite his lightheartedness, Nick was one of the most thoughtful and sentimental people you could meet.
He loved his family with everything he had. He married the love of his life, Carrie (Carowan) Helgason on October 10, 2020, the same day he proposed a year earlier, and the same day his family moved to the United States from Iceland in 1969. His mother always said, “his stars had aligned that day”. Nick adored his beautiful daughter Harpa Sofia, who he taught to bust a freestyle better than he could, and his little “bruiser” Griffin Gunnar, who is equally as energetic and prone to keeping all of us on our toes as much as Nick did. Before Harpa and Griffin could even walk, Nick took them in any farm equipment that would hold a car seat and had them picking up chickens before they could even fathom what they were actually doing. He never took the back seat or the easy way out in his marriage or parenting. He was the absolute best dad, a rock of a husband, a cherished son, a loving brother, and a deeply genuine friend to so many. Nick will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service and celebration of life will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025 beginning 12:00 p.m at Open Bible Church, 1619 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 with Pastor Steve Bloodsworth officiating. A viewing will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
Serving as pallbearers will be Bobby Helgason, Thor Gunnarsson, Leifur Sweitzer, Jonathan Taylor, Josh McPahil, Ryan Ewing, Dave Tran and Matt Lane.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Memorial Fund that has been set up for Harpa and Griffin Helgason: Burke and Herbert Bank 325 Bloomingdale Ave Federalsburg, MD 21632 or to Eldorado-Brookview Volunteer Fire Company, 5752 Rhodesdale Eldorado Road, Rhodesdale, MD 21659.
