Nicholas Ray Tom, known affectionately as Nick by his friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025, at the age of 72, in Phenix City, Alabama. Born on June 8, 1953, in Wright City, Oklahoma, Nick was a man of honor, warmth, and an unwavering spirit that touched the lives of all who knew him.
Nick's journey began as a proud member of the Choctaw Indian tribe, a heritage he held close to his heart throughout his life. His early years in Oklahoma were filled with the love and guidance of his parents, Albert and Genese (Columbus) Tom, who preceded him in death. Nick's life was one of dedication and service, which was exemplified by his distinguished career in the U.S. Army. He retired as a platoon sergeant, having spent years in infantry as well as a aviation maintenance specialist ensuring the safety and readiness of military aircraft. After his military service, Nick continued to serve his community by driving Groom Transport out of Columbus, a role that allowed him to connect with and support countless individuals after his military retirement.
Nick's life was further enriched by his loving marriage to his wife, Kaye Tom. Together, they shared 53 beautiful years, their bond growing stronger with each passing day. He was a devoted father to his three children, Brian Tom, Jennifer Tom, and Angie Tom. His legacy continued with the joy of his special grandson Zachary Elias Winston as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, sisters, and numerous extended family members who will forever cherish his memory.
An avid fisherman, Nick found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature. His hands were rarely still, as he was always found tinkering and fixing things around the house, a testament to his resourcefulness and talent for problem-solving. His interests were a reflection of his character - patient, thoughtful, and endlessly curious.
Nick's life was a tapestry of commitment, love, and resilience. His presence was a source of stability and strength for his family, and his guidance was the foundation upon which they built their lives. His laughter was infectious, his advice was sound, and his love was unconditional.
