NICHOLAS WASSIL FEBRUARY 14, 1936 – JANUARY 25, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Nicholas (Nick) Wassil announces his passing on January 25th at Henry Ford Ascension Hospital in Rochester Michigan. He was 88. Nick was born on February 14, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan and was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jacqueline (Jackie). He is survived by his four children, Jeffrey (Annette), Laura (James), Michael (Devona) and Joseph (Vicki), and his two grandchildren Nicholas and Adam (Vernae).
Nick attended the University of Michigan, where he met his future wife Jackie on a blind date. After graduating from Michigan with a degree in engineering, Nick served his country in the Army and was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Upon completing his service, he went to work for Ford Motor Company where he managed production at the Utica Trim, Michigan plant.
Nick and Jackie raised their family in Oxford, Michigan. Nick's love of music led him to play the clarinet and the alto saxophone. He was a member of the Oxford Dixie Katz band and played in many parades and local events. His engineering skills and patience made him the perfect tutor to his kids in all things "math".
A couple years prior to his retirement, Ford transferred Nick to the Juarez, Mexico plant and he and Jackie moved to El Paso, Texas. A loyal and dedicated employee, Nick retired from Ford after 33 years of service. After retiring from Ford, they moved to Long Island, New York where his expertise in production sewing proved valuable as a contract consultant to Point Blank, a start up tactical armor production company. Nick and Jackie moved from Long Island to Port St. Lucie, Florida where they spent the rest of their retirement years together. They were active members in their community and their church. Upon Jackie's passing in 2021, Nick moved into an assisted living facility in Port St. Lucie. The family moved him back to Oxford in August of 2024.
During his adult life, Nick was a bowler and golfer and he continued to golf into his seventies. He loved crossword puzzles and usually had a puzzle book by his favorite chair. Being an only child, Nick was quiet and reserved in public, but his family and close friends knew him as quick witted with a great sense of humor.
Nick will join Jackie where he will rest in peace with her in the columbarium at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Port St. Lucie.
Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors, 39 W. Burdick, Oxford, on Monday, February 3, 2025, from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. with a funeral service starting at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, it was Nick's wish that memorials in his name be sent to St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 295 NW Prima Vista, Port St. Lucie, Florida, 34983
