It's not an exaggeration to say that Dr. K (as he was known at Emory School of Medicine) changed my life. I met him on a one week elective in pediatric palliative care during my third year of medical school and was so drawn to him (and the field) that I did a full month elective with him the following year. I learned more about life than about medicine during that month but his sharp wit, his gentle and kind manner with patients, and his insistence on making space for living his life within the practice of medicine have shaped my career forever.
He wrote one of my letters of recommendation and while interviewing at one of my top choice programs the director told me unprompted "you know, that French neurologist REALLY had some nice things to say about you." This comment made it clear that he had (unsurprisingly) put an effort and care into the letter that stood out even to somebody who reads hundreds of them.
I'll be forever grateful for that kindness and for everything that he taught me about being a doctor and being a human being.
He'll be missed.

I had just bought the suit that my 12-year-old son would wear to his first 7th grade banquet later that week when I was summoned to the medical center where he recently had an MRI. Knees fail and legs collapse when you hear a report from four doctors confirming that your child has less than a 1% chance to live due to a brain tumor! In my mind, the only way to combat that report was called "a miracle."
Dr. Krawiecki entered our hospital room late that evening to explain the procedure he would perform on my son the following morning. He presented as calming, caring, and hopeful. When he left, I prayed for him for steady hands and ready knowledge for bringing my son through the surgery, and I prayed for his wife for her contributions to his successes by providing a peaceful environment for him at home.
The next day, following a 12-hour surgery, we were informed that my son's tumor was completely removed and that it appeared to be benign! I cried tears of relief while my mother dropped to her knees in praise and thankfulness. Therapies and follow-ups were required, but in our household, Dr. Krawiecki's name became a term of endearment over decades.
My son missed his 7th grade banquet, but he attended his high school prom, and yesterday,
he celebrated his 48th birthday! Throughout his recoveries, he engaged in the visual arts and he continues to successfullly express creativity through the arts - for that I am thankful.
Dr. Krawiecki was the embodiment of the miracle we needed those decades ago, and we thank God for him and for his life. Just as importantly, we thank God that his family was able to share his skills, kindnesses and caring with the rest of us for all of those beautiful years.
My son and I will continue to talk about Dr. Krawiecki because it brings us joy and peace to do so. And, we will be forever thankful that miracles happen everyday and that one day in the fall of 1989, a miracle in the form of Dr. Nicolas Krawiecki blessed our lives.
Sending thankful and beautiful memories from our hearts to yours, I am,
Debra M. Dwight, mother of
Jakob Dwight, brain tumor survivor and visual artist

Dr. K was a great small group leader and an even greater person. His brilliance and humility shined through as he cared about the progress each one of us made through med school. He was funny, fun, kind, and loving. He made a unique difference on each one of us. And he will be so deeply missed.

When Nick greeted you with the kiss on both cheeks and then asked how you were doing, he really meant it. He wanted to know how you were doing. He was always willing to give advice if you asked, and it was usually very sage advise. His was a life to be emulated. I feel privileged to have known Nick.

Hi Nick - I didn´t know you well but, our paths crossed while we volunteered for the Chamber Music Festival, while mentoring for TSIC and, of course, when we were together on the Petanque courts. I knew you to be a kind, generous and gentle soul. Thank you for touching my life.

I had the great pleasure of learning from Nick as part of the Brain Tumor study with Robin Morris when I was a GSU graduate student back in the late 1980s. We would meet weekly to review and I appreciated his insights and experiences as a neurologist. He also served on my PhD dissertation committee. As a result of Robin's and Nick's influence on me, I specialized in the neuropsychology of childhood cancer and working with pediatric brain tumor patients and survivors remains my passion to this day.
One of the comments I remember from Nick is that he told us (probably with a hint of mischief in his eye) that he didn't believe in exercise--that one is allotted a certain number of heartbeats and he didn't want to waste his on exercise. I know he made good on every heartbeat he was allotted and his family, his patients, his students and friends are all the better for it. May his memory continue to bless you.

Every once in a while you meet somone for the first time and you have an instant connection. This is that happened when we all met in Augusta in 1981 at a newcomer party at the synagogue. We developed a true friendship where we treated each other like family . We included each other in every celebration or events in our lives even when they moved to Atlanta after 4 years in Augusta. I do remember endless conversations good food wine laughs and sorrow .
Despite the fact that we didn´t see them but once when they retired to FLA we do sense a strong connection.
Their son sacha lived in our Augusta home during his last year of med school.
Life is not fair but at least for me I know he had a very full life and did exactly what he wanted.
Lis and the rest of their family were blessed with a wonderful human being . The memories will last forever .
love and big hugs from NYC

Nick was a man with the biggest heart. He and Lis were huge supporters of my music. They regularly opened their home to everyone. I visited with them in Georgia and once at their home on Amelia Island. I wish I would have spent more time with them. If the measure of a man is seen through the actions of his family, then Nick was THAT dude. Lis has told me countless stories of the pride she has for her children and grandchildren which is a direct result of their parenting. I send love, light, and abundant healing through music and art to Lis and the family. BlesSings Nick Love Rhonda Thomas & Ron Smith

Nick was an incredible man, and I felt that right away from the moment we first met. Even though he was only in our lives for a short time, he left a lasting impact. I´ll always treasure the memory of our guys´ night - cooking scallops together, sharing wine and scotch, enjoying a cigar, and talking openly about life. I truly wish we´d had the chance for many more nights like that. It´s a vivid memory I´ll carry with me always.
