Nicole Elizabeth Linker

Nicole Elizabeth Linker, 30, died at her home in Clive, IA on November 11, 2021. Nicole had struggled for nearly a decade with the addiction that ultimately took her life. Through all the turmoil and heartbreak that comes with this, the joy, laughter and love she brought to her family far outweigh the grief.
Nicole loved her dogs and cats; she loved the moon and the number 22. She hated chalk with a passion and was terrified by thunderstorms. She often said she could not survive without music and was never without ear buds or Bluetooth speaker. She adored being "Auntie Nel" and best friend to her 5-year-old cousin Mikayla.
On June 15, 2021, Nicole gave birth to her beloved daughter, Ruby Acadia. Her pregnancy caused much anxiety for her family. We feared that someone who could barely care for themselves would not be capable of caring for a child. We could not have been more wrong. Nicole embraced motherhood, she was obsessive about Ruby's health and developmental milestones. She loved to sing songs to Ruby, brush her wispy hair, and give her a foot massage with lotion after her baths. We have never seen Nicole experience such pleasure and happiness. She lived to find new ways to bring a smile to her little "Roo" and make her giggle and laugh.
Nicole had expressed many years ago how difficult her addiction was, that every day was a nearly unbearable struggle to fight the urge to use. This caused her terrible guilt, that the struggle continued. She believed the wonderful gifts she'd been given in life and the blessing of Ruby should have made the disease disappear. When it didn't, she thought this meant she was a bad person, that her family and her daughter deserved better. She was mistaken. Nicole was the best mother Ruby could have every hoped for. Nicole took painstaking efforts to ensure that Ruby was safe and protected and cared for even on her last day with us. Nicole was a bright light for her family every day.
Nicole is survived by her daughter, Ruby Lacey; Fiancé, Micaleb Lacey; parents, Craig Linker and Kim and David McVicker; grandmother, Diane Showman and grandfather, Harry Showman; aunts, Amy Showman and Jessica Brock (Nate); sisters, Ashley Hellrung and Jessica Valdez; and cousins, Brianna Goodside (Lucas) and Mikayla George. There are many other extended family members and friends who have provided much love and support who will also mourn her passing. Nicole was preceded in death by her great grandparents, Ruth and John Brown and Ruby Linker as well as her beloved miniature dachshund, Peanut and cat, Willie.
Our hope and wish is that anyone struggling with addiction knows that there is no shame in reaching out for help. You are worthwhile, you are loved. Every day will not be perfect and there will be struggles, but there is a path forward and support available to help.
