Nina L. Kirchberger ObituaryNina L. Kirchberger, 90, passed away at Hartford Hospital on May 23, 2025.
She was born on December 20, 1934, in Centerville, KS to Emma E. Hazen and Boyd B. Logan. She was raised on the family farm in Centerville, KS with her eleven siblings where she learned the importance of combining hard work and fun. As a teenager, she moved to Morris, Connecticut and lived with her dear friends Marjorie and John Tonkin, whom she referred to as her foster parents and cared deeply for. She graduated from the James Morris School and during that time met her husband, William T. Kirchberger whom she married in March 1952. Together they settled in Morris where they raised three children.
Nina worked as a waitress at The Coffee Shop and at Tollgate in Litchfield, as a product assembler at Bristol Babcock, a CNA at Rose Haven, and a housekeeper at the Trinity Conference Center, retiring in 1996. She continued caring for the homes of several of her friends for many years after her retirement. She loved gardening and enjoyed working at White Flower Farm, as well as tending her own flower and vegetable gardens. She was an expert at canning vegetables, stuffing jalapenos, and making delicious pickles that she would share with neighbors and friends. Nina was a talented quilter and took great pride in making 100% hand sewn quilts for her children and grandchildren. She was very fond of making chocolate peanut butter balls at Christmas; a tradition that has spanned four generations and will continue. She enjoyed watching the hummingbirds in her backyard feeders and being entertained by her cats, Dusty & Snickers. Above all else, Nina's favorite activity was being a mother and a grandmother, cherishing her visits with family and preparing meals for them.
She was predeceased by her parents, several siblings, and her husband. She is survived by her sister Doris Fisher of Maryville, MO and her children; Thomas (Janet) of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Edward (Lisa) of Ashland, MA, and Heather Kirchberger of Morris. She is survived by her six grandchildren, Jaime Makuc (Paul), Jerrod Kirchberger (Ali), Lauren Kirchberger, Alex Kirchberger, Gwen Karpa, Jessica Wasik and her great granddaughter, Michaela Makuc, and several nieces and nephews. She treasured the special closeness she had with her niece Marlena Damme of San Antonio, TX.
Per Nina's request, burial and services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Nina's memory to Western Connecticut Mental Health Network, 249 Winsted Road, Torrington, CT 06790; and Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Litchfield County, 32 Union Street, Winsted, CT 06098.
