Noel Tanneur, 90, of Robinson, IL, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Robinson Rehab & Nursing. His remarkable story began on September 10, 1935, in Lépanges-sur-Vologne, France, a small village tucked among green hills and winding roads. As a boy, he learned the art of fencing—its balance, timing, and precision—and in many ways, that discipline mirrored how he approached the rest of his life: with quiet focus and grace.

At just fifteen years old, he set out on an adventure that would shape everything that followed. Leaving his family and his homeland behind, Noel crossed the Atlantic alone to join his sister in America. He passed through Ellis Island, then hopped on a biplane bound for Wyoming. In the wide-open spaces of the American West, Noel’s love for challenge and discovery took root. He climbed mountains like Devils Tower and the Tetons, chasing both the thrill of the ascent and the quiet awe of the view from the top. Those early years out west forged in him an adventurous spirit, but also a deep humility; a mix that would serve him well for the rest of his days.

He pursued his education at the University of Idaho, earning a degree in engineering. That degree would become his passport to a long and steady career with Marathon Oil, where he worked for 36 years as an electrical engineer. His work reflected who he was: precise, patient, and steady. He built his reputation not through flash or force, but through quiet competence and an unwavering commitment to doing things right.

Retirement for Noel wasn’t a slowing down but a redirection of purpose. He spent many happy days at Oak Glen, whether swinging a golf club or casting a fishing line, and when he wasn’t outdoors, he could often be found cheering on his Chicago Bears. Win or lose, he stuck with them through it all; a quiet testament to the loyalty and faithfulness with which he daily lived. That same steadfast spirit carried over into the way he loved his wife, Toni. His loyalty to her ran deeper than habit. It was a choice he made every day, a quiet reflection of his heart’s devotion to her, and to the family they built together. His sons, Jeff and Jon Tanneur, were his pride, and his granddaughter, Jonna, was his joy. They serve as living reminders of a life well-loved — a legacy not of words, but of presence, patience, and care.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Tonita “Toni” Tanneur; his sister, Suzanne Sackmann; and his brother, Jean Tanneur.

In keeping with Noel’s wishes, cremation will take place, and no public services will be held. The Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson is assisting his family with arrangements.
