Nola Chamberlain Covington died peacefully at the age of 102 on November 4, 2025, at home in Hurricane, Utah. On July 29, 1923, she was born in Kanab, Utah to Edward Leo Chamberlain and Cora Esplin, joining two older sisters, Ioan and Roma, followed by two younger brothers, Kelton and Von Del. Nola was raised in Kanab and enjoyed a happy family life and many childhood friends. During high school she worked behind the ice cream counter at Fenton's Drug Store and also at Picket Lumber, a store her father managed. She was a graduate of Kanab High School.
Nola married Fen Heber Covington, M.D. in her home in Kanab on December 24, 1940. From the outset of WWII Fen was an officer in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. She joined him at postings in Beloit, Wisconsin and Abeline, Texas until he was shipped to the Pacific for four years where he worked as an Army Physician in Hawaii and several Pacific Theater battle campaigns. During those years Nola remained in Kanab and worked at Picket Lumber.
Following WWII Fen returned to Kanab to practice medicine for a few years. Daughter, Connie, was born there in 1946. Thereafter, they moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for residency training in pathology, and then to Salt Lake City for Fen's residency training in obstetrics and gynecology. Son, Fen Bruce, was born in Salt Lake City in 1950. Daughter, Roma, was also born there prematurely on January 1, 1955. About two weeks later tiny Roma passed away. Nola never got to hold this precious baby girl. Fen and Nola moved to Twin Falls, Idaho where daughter, Carol, was born in 1956.
Except for a year in Santa Barbara, California, Fen and Nola resided happily in Twin Falls where they raised their children and established deep roots. Nola enjoyed many friends and family experiences there for the next 46 years, as she supported her husband in his busy OB/GYN practice, and raised her children. She especially loved the times spent at the family cabin north of Ketchum, Idaho and later at their cabin in Stanley, Idaho.
Nola was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. An excellent cook and homemaker, her pies were legendary. Her grandchildren have vivid memories of "pie at Grandma's" on Sunday evenings. She supported and encouraged her children in all their school, dancing, music and social endeavors. Her devotion to friends was noteworthy.
Nola was an active, lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many capacities in the Relief Society and Young Women's organizations throughout the years. She and Fen were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They served as missionaries for the Church in the Germany South Mission, assigned to work with German and American members and friends of the Church in Nuremberg, Germany. She thoroughly loved her mission, the German language, which she spoke reasonably well, and many dear friends from there. She later worked as a German language record extractor for the Church, and as a Temple Worker in both the Boise and Twin Falls, Idaho Temples.
Notable travels in her life included trips with family to Yellowstone National Park; to Canada with Fen; a train trip with family to Detroit to pick up a new Pontiac; driving it home through Canada; touring Germany and other countries following Bruce's mission to Germany; and traveling to Isreal with son, Bruce, and good friends from Twin Falls.
Fen passed away in 1993. She remained a widow for 32 years.
When Nola realized she could no longer drive safely, she moved to Hurricane, Utah to live close to her daughter, Connie. Later Nola's son, Bruce and his wife Marcia, moved to Hurricane to help with her care. They built a casita next to their home in Hurricane where Nola resided for the past several years until her death.
Nola is preceded in death by her husband, Fen; parents, Edward Leo Chamberlain and Cora Esplin; sisters, Ioan Smith and Roma Fenton; brother, Kelton Chamberlain; daughters: Roma and Connie Korab; and son-in-law, Gar Hackney. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Marcia Covington of Hurricane, Utah; daughter and son-in-law, Carol Hackney and Pat Cavanaugh of Boise, Idaho; brother, Von Del Chamberlain of Kanab, Utah; grandchildren: Scott (Lori) Korab, Torrey (Greg) Gillespie, Jeff (Jessica) Korab, Tiffany (Eric) Porter, Amy (Tony) Werrett, Esther (Mark) Covington, Joel (Mark), Matthew (Jamie); nineteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter expected in March.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing prior at 10:00 a.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Northeast Building Relief Society Room, 470 Mario Capecchi Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. Interment will follow in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to the Humanitarian Relief Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or to a
charity of your choice.
The family expresses gratitude for the gentle and loving care given to Nola by Michelle, Cassie and Corrine from Zion's Way Hospice and additional CNA help from Sky, Dani and Brynlee.
