Birchmeier, Norbert William – of Chesaning, Michigan, a beloved father, grandfather, and brother passed away on January 29, 2024. Norbert was born on August 12,1931, in Chesaning and was 92 years old. He married the late Joan Marie Lange on April 26,1952, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Saginaw.
Norbert grew up in Chesaning, attended school at Chesaning Our Lady, he lived his entire life in Chesaning with the exception of serving four years in the military. Norbert worked as an orderly at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw, trained to be a mechanic with International Harvester and used that training working as a mechanic at Chesaning Sales Company. Following the death of his father, Albert, in 1961, Norbert began a farming career with his brother Carl, until selling the farm in 1984. He then worked at New Lothrop Hardware and Alderman's in Lennon until retiring from farm implement sales in 1993.
Norbert enjoyed sports (loved the Tigers) and spending time "fixing" anything that could be fixed. He was an avid bowler, participating as a member of a family bowling team from 1959 until 2011, and was a long-time member of the Senior Softball league in Chesaning. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Norbert was an active member of Chesaning Our Lady of Perpetual Help (now St. Peter Parish), serving as a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Norbert will be missed and survived by four sons, Norbert Jr. (Deanna) of Benton Harbor, Gerard of Chesaning, Steven (Lori) of Miamisburg, Ohio, and Joseph (Susan) of New Braunfels, TX; 15 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; his brothers and sisters, Alberta Young, Vincent (Winnie) and Elenor Birchmeier, Fred (Tony) and Marion Birchmeier, Dallas and Carolyn Birchmeier, Albert and Linda Birchmeier all of Chesaning, Janice Angst of New Lothrop, Sr. Josephine Mary Birchmeier of Grand Rapids, Lawrence and Elaine Birchmeier of Owosso, and Daniel and Janice Birchmeier of Ithaca. He leaves numerous other relatives, in-laws, and good friends. Norbert was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; five infant children; one special great-grandchild Madeline Joan Birchmeier; his parents; a brother, Carl and Majorie Birchmeier; and brothers-in-law, Peter Young and Dallas Angst.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024, at St. Peter Parish Catholic Church in Chesaning with Rev. Fr. Raj Bandaru officiating. The burial will be in the Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call at Misiuk Funeral Home on Friday from 2-7 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Rosary Service to be prayed at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the visitation will be at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Peter Endowment Fund. You may light a memorial candle or share a memory at misiukfuneralhome.com.
