Norma E. Batson Farmer was born on March 5, 1941, in Havana, Cuba, to the late Alfred Batson and Clara Minto. She spent her early childhood in Havana with her parents and three sisters before her family migrated to the United States. After briefly living in Coconut Grove, the family settled in Liberty City in 1955, which became their permanent home.
Norma graduated from George Washington Carver High School in Miami, Florida, and later moved to Riley, North Carolina. She attended St. Augustine's College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. During her time in North Carolina, she was actively involved in the Civil Rights Movement, living through a pivotal era in American history.
Following the completion of her education, Norma returned to Miami, Florida, where she dedicated her life to education. As an educator, she was reassigned and appointed to teach in integrated schools, remaining steadfast in her commitment to both teaching and activism. In 1970, she began her long and impactful career at Nathan B. Young Elementary School. Over more than 30 years of service, she educated and inspired several generations of students, contributing to high academic success and lasting community impact. Notably, one of her former students went on to become the Mayor of Opa-locka.
Norma's life was defined by perseverance, service, and an unwavering dedication to education and social progress.
She was preceded in death by her parents Alfred Batson and Clara Minto, Sisters Marva and Sonya along with her Nephew Corey, whom we take comfort in knowing welcomed her with open arms.
Though the pain of her loss is overwhelming, we find solace in the memories she left behind.
Her spirit will live on in every shared story, every echo of laughter, and every act of love inspired by her example. forever carry her in our hearts.
Those left to cherish her precious memories include her sons, Alfred (Danielle) Farmer of Port St. Lucie, Florida, and Kingsley (Pamela) Farmer of Miramar, Florida; her sister, Carol Jones of Danbury, Connecticut; and her beloved grandchildren, Alfred Farmer, Jr., Khiala Farmer, AlLaiya Farmer, Faith Threatt, and Kenyon Farmer. She is also lovingly remembered by her nephews, Ronald Culmer, David Culmer, and Raqib Jones; her nieces, Lisa Culmer, Rhonda Neal, Andrea Jones, and Liena Jones; her beloved cousins, Evelyn Barrett, Ucola Barrett- Baxter, Norman; and her dear friends, Vanessa Jackson and Catherine Washington, along with a host of other family members and friends.
