Norman Arthur Fleetwood, known affectionately as Norm to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, at the age of 88 in Columbus, Indiana. Born on November 2, 1937, in Seymour, Indiana, the son of Arthur and Martha Estelle Sexton Fleetwood. Norm was a man of integrity, intelligence, and an innate ability to fix anything he put his hands on.
Norm's life was one of dedication and love, most notably shared with his beloved wife, Carol Jane (Moorman) Fleetwood. Their remarkable marriage spanned 67 years, a testament to their unwavering commitment and deep affection for one another. Together, they built a life filled with joy, adventure, and the warmth of family.
A skilled mechanic by trade, Norm retired from the Cummins Tech Center after 19 years of committed service. His expertise and problem-solving abilities were not only valued at work but also within his community, where he was a respected member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Norm's faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him in his daily actions and providing a source of strength and comfort.
Norm's love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew him. He found solace and excitement in fishing the waters of Florida, where he would often retreat to bask in the serenity of nature. Camping trips were a favorite family activity, allowing Norm to share his passion for the outdoors with those he cherished most.
A man of simple pleasures, Norm had a fondness for old westerns, with the GRIT channel and "Gun Smoke" being his go-to sources of entertainment. His love for these classic tales of the wild west was noted on a recent trip in which he was not satisfied until his need was met for an old western movie.
In September of 2025, Norm and his family took their last family vacation to Gatlinburg, creating memories that would be cherished forever. It was a fitting final journey for a man who had always placed family at the center of his universe. This beloved man, better known to his family and close friends as Stormin' Norman, also agreed to do a family photo shoot dressed in Western Wear.
Norm will be remembered as a man who was as handy as he was intelligent. His ability to solve problems was matched only by his capacity for kindness and his gentle spirit. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his teachings will continue to guide his loved ones for generations to come.
Norm is survived by his loving wife, Carol; children, Melody A. Gess, Debra K. (Wendell) Crouch, Karen L. (Ed) Hugill, and Michael N. (Linda S.) Fleetwood; grandchildren, April Foster, Ashley Brown, and Amanda Westenbarger; 6 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Amy Lizenby, Inez Greathouse, Sarah Carlock, Irma Galloway, Verlis Fleetwood, Lloyd Fleetwood, James Fleetwood, and Orville Fleetwood.
A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Jewell Rittman Funeral Home with Pastor TJ Kummerfeldt officiating. Calling hours will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Surprise Christian Church through the funeral home or directly to the church by mailing to Surprise Christian Church 6382 N CR 100 W Seymour, IN 47274.
