Norman Payne was a wonderful man and great teacher. I consider myself lucky to have known Norman and call him a friend. Norman dedicated his professional career to the children in Campbell County Schools and spent that time providing high quality educational experiences for his students that challenged them to learn skills that would benefit them in adulthood. Norman was a kind teacher that modeled professionalism and always had high expectations for his students. He had a positive impact on so many students over the years. I am grateful for all that he gave for the betterment of others.
My prayers are with the family during this difficult time. I admire Norman, even facing his battle with Parkinson´s, he would remain positive and share that infectious smile and some laughter with his friends. We love you Norman and I look forward to seeing you again one day my friend, with our Heavenly Father.
Sincerely
Jon Hardie

Norman was such a kind, gentle, and happy soul. I had not seen him in many years. I worked alongside Norman in setting up a laboratory for nondestructive testing at Campbell County Technical Center. Norman was such a trooper to take on the challenge. Norman, your memory stays with me as one of the people I most enjoyed working with. Many prayers for Freda and the family during this difficult time. Norman, Rest in Peace, my friend.

Freda, Laura, Danny, and extended family, I am so sorry for your loss. I know Mr. Payne invited me to call him Norman, but I just couldn't break the habit. He was such a caring, kind, wise person, and I have many fond memories of him. I recall many good times on the badminton courts - maybe he and Dad will be partners again in Heaven.
He was truly so encouraging as a teacher - it was his calling. He had the patience of a saint, and I know he loved all of you with his entire heart.
The world lost a noble soul. I wanted to share that he was a wonderful influence and presence in my life and I will miss him dearly. My love goes out to all of you.
With love,

Norm participated in a Power Moves class at the YMCA when I volunteered as a "Cornerman". We shared a love of the same kinds of music, and Norm was kind enough to give me CD copies of some of his favorite albums. He worked so hard to maintain his independence and level of function while always quick with a ready smile, and a joke. True Hokie spirit!
