Norman Phillips Obituary

Norman K. Phillips, age 82, of New Palestine, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2025, at IU Health Methodist Hospital. He was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania on September 1, 1943, to Norman E. and Elizabeth A. (McChesney) Phillips. He graduated from New Castle Pennsylvania High School in 1962. Norman started at God's Bible School in 1962, then went onto study and graduate from Malone University in Canton, Ohio to receive his Bachelors of Social Sciences degree in 1967. He then attended and graduated from Mt. Vernon University in Mt. Vernon, Ohio to receive his Master's in Theology degree in 2000. He married Carmen D. (Kingen) on July 30, 1965, in Indianapolis.

Norman was a pastor for Nazarene Churches in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and West Virginia for thirty-eight years. He then went on to be a Professor in Philosophy and Religion for Campbell County High School in Alexandria, Kentucky and Indiana Wesleyan University in Indianapolis and Greenwood for eleven years before retiring. Norman was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Indianapolis for many years. He was recognized in Who's Who for Christian Leadership. He served on the District Advisory Board and served as the District Secretary for West Virginia. Norman also served as a Trustee for Mt. Vernon University for eleven years. He was the President of the Ministerial Association for Belle, West Virginia for many years. In 1977, he served on the Executive Committee of Billy Graham Crusade in Cincinnati, Ohio. In his spare time, he loved swimming, traveling, photography, and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Carmen Phillips; brother, Ned (Patty) Phillips; sister, Martha (Larry) Huffman; stepbrother, Dr. Carl Schultz; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman E. and Elizabeth A. Phillips; stepbrother, Bill Phillips; and stepsisters, Goldie Schultz and Katie Jones.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Indianapolis First Church of the Nazarene, 9401 E. 25th St. Indianapolis, IN 46229. A funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Joel Burbrink will be officiating. Burial will follow at Reeves Cemetery in Greenfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made by mail to the Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607. Envelopes will be available at the church.
