In the heart of Marcus Bowie, the grandson of the late Odessa H. Bowie, lies a kaleidoscope of heartwarming memories and tales of his beloved Great-Grandmother. Much like the vibrant wildflowers of her birthplace, Franklin, TX, Odessa bloomed into a compassionate, dedicated, loving, and talented woman who graced the world on March 29, 1914. Her journey on earth may have ended on May 17, 2025, but her spirit continues to flourish in the hearts of those who knew her.
Odessa, an embodiment of love and dedication, spent 20 years of her life serving as a Child Nutrition Specialist at Arlington Park Elementary School. She was an artist in her own right, painting love and nutrition on the canvas of young lives. Her hobbies were just as diverse as her talents; she took joy in sewing, gardening, tackling puzzle books, and cooking. Odessa's culinary expertise was a testament of her love for her family, as she whipped up meals that were nothing short of a labor of love.
As a devout Christian, Odessa's faith was the foundation of her life. She found joy in serving on the Communion Board at her beloved ST PAUL United Methodist Church, a Dallas Historic Landmark. Her unwavering faith was a beacon of light for those around her. The verse from Matthew 5:16 resonates with her life, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
Odessa was recognized as the matriarch and the oldest living resident of her community in Arlington Park. Her wisdom and dedication earned her the admiration of all around her. She was a living testament to the power of faith, family, and helping others, and always insisted on eating healthy and staying active. Her walks around the neighborhood became a cherished routine, extending well into her late 80s.
She is survived by her grandson, Marcus Bowie and his spouse Mimi Tapia-Bowie, and her great-grandsons, Ayden Bowie and Rico Bowie. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim Gray and Ora Gray. Odessa's love, strength, and legacy will continue to inspire her family and those who knew her.
Marcus invites all who knew his Great-Grandmother to share their memories of Odessa on the memorial page. He encourages you to upload photos that capture the essence of this remarkable woman, whose life was a testament to love, faith, and service. Remember, "the righteous will be in everlasting remembrance" (Psalm 112:6). To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Odessa, please visit our Tree Store.
