Opal Black

February 16, 1923 – November 24, 2025

Opal Black, 102, of Stephenville, passed away on November 24, 2025, at a local assisted living facility. Opal was born on
February 16, 1923, to the late Thomas Benjamin House and Bertie (Newman) House in Jasper, Texas. She married George W. Black on October 20, 1946, in Jasper, Texas.

She began the study of art in childhood and had a lifetime passion for painting. Opal attended the University of Texas and continued her study of art while there as a student. She was a multi-talented artist and painted in pastels, watercolors and oils. Opal greatly enjoyed teaching art classes for many years and her paintings received numerous awards at art shows. She was an active member and supporter of the Cross Timbers Fine Art Council.

Opal was active in service to the community and her church. She devoted many years to the International Students Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughter, Beth Ann Smith and husband, Richard of Brackettville, Texas; one son, Patrick Black of Tyler, Texas; and five grandchildren, Dale Smith and wife Amber, Brent Smith, Ashley Barnes and husband Jordan, Patrick Black and Travis Black; six great grandchildren, Shiloh, Adaline and Zeke Smith; Aubrey, Layton and Luke Barnes. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Black, one brother, Tom Ben House, and one sister, Laura Holmes.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, December 1st, 2025, at Lacy Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 2nd, at Lacy Funeral Home with Pastor Ken May, First Baptist Church Stephenville, officiating. A private family burial service will be held at the Erath Gardens of Memory cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Samaritan's Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC, 28607 or Cross Timbers Fine Art Council, 148 W College Street, Stephenville Texas 76401.

The family would like to thank the Wings Over Texas Hospice nurses who gave loving care to Opal Black in her final days.
