Opal McKinney

PRINCETON – Opal Irene McKinney,84, of Princeton passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 10, 2025. Born October 9, 1941, in Basin, WV, she was the daughter of the late Theodore Shrewsbury and Jennis Garretson Shrewsbury.

Opal was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She was also a seamstress for many years. She also enjoyed quilting and crafting. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Sherman Lowell McKinney; and two sisters, Leona McKinney, and Hester White.

Those left to cherish her memory include two children, Pamela Thorne and husband Terry, of Princeton, with whom she made her home for the last 17 years, and Wayne McKinney and wife Dora, of TN; brothers, Harold Shrewsbury and wife Connie of Odd, and Dale Shrewsbury and wife Anthonette of Beckley; sister, Elsie McKinney and husband Britian of Basin; grandchildren, who she adored, Christopher Thorne and companion Sophia Catron, and Joel Thorne and wife Makayla, all of Princeton; and three great-grandchildren, Clarabelle, Elliott, and Everleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to acknowledge Mercer Healthcare Center staff for the wonderful care of their mother. Their kindness and compassion is greatly appreciated.

Funeral Service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton, with Pastor Dewey Lowe, officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

The family will receive visitors from noon until the service hour.
