Opal was born January 2, 1928, on a farm north of Kandiyohi, the daughter of Eddie and Anna (Hanson) Thompson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Green Lake Lutheran Church. Opal attended country school and later Willmar High School, graduating in 1946.

On February 12, 1949, she married Leonard Stulen. They lived and farmed in the Spicer area for many years. Opal was a devoted wife and mother, helping on the farm and lovingly raising their eight children.

She was a longtime member of Green Lake Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Women's Missionary Society. Opal enjoyed embroidery and made many towels and pillowcases for her family. She was also a wonderful baker, and her family especially enjoyed her bread, brownies, and cakes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, in 2021; a son, Ellsworth Stulen; a brother, Howard (Marie) Thompson; a sister, Elaine (Carsten) Stulen; a grandson, Troy Stulen; and a great-granddaughter, Kyla Joy Stulen.
