It is with heavy hearts and a deep sense of loss that we bid farewell to Orestis Kaltsounis a man whose strength, love, and unwavering commitment to family defined his rich and purposeful life. Orestis was a pillar of the Hellenic community and left an indelible mark on the lives of those he touched. Orestis passed away peacefully on December 5, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones.
Orestis was the loving husband and life partner of Kessie Kaltsounis, sharing a journey of joys and challenges for 52 years. As a father to Nick (Georgia) Kaltsounis, Andrew (Marisa) Kaltsounis and Mary (Daniell) Kaltsounis Wagner, Orestis was a guiding light, offering unwavering support, sage advice, and boundless love. His dedication to his children was evident in the values he instilled, the lessons he imparted, and the countless cherished memories created together. To his grandchildren, Sia, Katerina, Sophia, Orestes, Yianni, Thomas and Ana Sophia he was a source of endless joy and leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and the enduring importance of family bonds. He leaves behind his siblings Kasani, Eleftheria, Yianoula, and Bill. Along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives who mourn his loss. He will join his siblings Theodore, Michalis, Margarita in eternal life.
Born January 9, 1941 Orestis dedicated his life to his family, the promotion of Hellenism in Michigan, leaving behind a legacy of tireless service and profound contributions to the cultural and civic fabric of the community.
Orestis served as the President of the Pan-Epirotic Society of Michigan for an impressive 11 years, demonstrating unwavering commitment and leadership. Throughout his tenure, he held every position on the Executive Board, showcasing a deep understanding of the organization and a passion for fostering a strong sense of identity among its members. Additionally, he played a pivotal role on the National Pan-Epirotic Society Board of Directors and served as the President of the Pan-Epirotic Convention, including the notable Boston Convention.
A devoted member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church for 25 years, Orestis served in various leadership roles, including President, Vice President, and Board member. His presidency oversaw major repairs to the church, ensuring its continued support of the congregation for the next two decades. A choir member and Cantor for 15 years, he also volunteered for 23 years at the Opa!Fest, contributing to the vibrant cultural life of the church.
In his earlier years, Orestis was a member of St. John's Greek Orthodox Church, where he served as Treasurer and Board member for 10 years. His impact extended beyond religious affiliations as he founded the St. John's Soccer League in 1980, fostering community engagement through sports.
Beyond his contributions to Hellenism, Orestis was an active participant in various civic organizations. As a life member of the Auburn Hills Optimist Morning Club, he served as President and Program Director. His dedication earned him the position of Optimist Lieutenant Governor for District Six in the State of Michigan for two years. Orestis also served as a Board Member for Parks & Recreation and Troy Board of Zoning in the City of Troy, leaving an indelible mark on local governance. Orestis was an active member of Masonic Order, attaining the prestigious 32nd degree in the Shrines Order.
His commitment to youth extended to Troy Youth Soccer, where he was a member from 1980 to 2000. In 2001, Orestis founded the Michigan Youth Soccer Club, contributing to the development of an adult league and furthering his impact on the local sports community.
Outside his community engagements, Orestis had a diverse work history. From owning Orestis Restaurant from 1977 to 1987 to his current role as an Insurance Agent since 1999, he demonstrated versatility and dedication in all his endeavors. His early years included working as an Electrician at Capital Corporation.
Orestis will be remembered not only for his numerous achievements and contributions but also for his warmth, kindness, and the lasting impact he had on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a community deeply grateful for his selfless service and a cultural legacy that will endure for generations to come.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all friends and well-wishers for their support during this difficult time. Visitation will be Friday, December 8, 2023 from 4-8pm at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 1368 N Crooks Rd,
Clawson, MI 48017, United States with a Trisagion at 7pm. Funeral Service will be on Saturday, December 9, at 10am at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 760 W. Wattles Rd., Troy 48098. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am. Orestis will be laid to rest at White Chapel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Blessings in a Backpack - Avondale and the Kidney Foundation in memory of Orestis.
