Remembering Dr. Ronald Schiraldi
Oronzo "Ronald" Schiraldi, M.D. passed away May 9, 2022, at the age of 88 in Naples, FL. He was born September 30, 1933, in New York, NY. His parents, Paul and Grace Schiraldi, moved the family to Palisades Park, NJ, where Ronald spent his childhood. He attended St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, NJ, and went on to graduate from Georgetown University in 1955, and Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1959.
Following his education, Ronald completed his Internship, Residency, and Fellowship in Cardiology at St. Michael's Hospital in Newark, NJ. It was during his time at St. Michael's that he met his future wife, Louise Miraglia. The two married on June 23, 1963 and moved to Lakewood, NJ, where they raised their family. Ronald would go on to practice Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Paul Kimball Hospital and Lakewood Medical Specialists for the next 35 years. His very special friendship and partnership with Dr. Irwin Roseff and the late Dr. Seymour Berger grew into Lakewood Medical Specialists, a multi-specialist practice in Ocean County, NJ. It was the first of its kind in the area. Ronald was highly regarded by his patients and colleagues for both his caring nature and outstanding diagnostic abilities.
In 1966, Ronald was drafted from his medical practice and served two years as a Lieutenant Commander at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, IL during the Viet Nam War. He returned to his medical practice in NJ following his service in the Navy. Later in life, he also served as a Flotilla Commander in the United States Coast Guard and maintained his Captain's License with great pride.
Having a lifelong passion for the sea, one could often find Ronald fishing or cruising out on the open ocean aboard the "Dian-a-Lor," the boat he named after his daughters. He would later trade in his boat for a set of golf clubs, enjoying time on the golf course with family and friends. Ronald also was a life-long supporter of Georgetown University, which he considered his "second home." He was an avid fan of the Georgetown Hoyas basketball team.
Following his retirement to Long Beach Island, NJ, Ronald and Louise split time between Long Beach Island and Naples, FL, eventually making Naples their permanent residence.
Ronald is survived by his wife Louise Schiraldi, his daughters Diane Schiraldi Rivero and Lori Schiraldi Delia and her husband Ed Delia. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Alexis Rivero, Victoria Delia, and Max Delia, and his sister Rose Wehmeyer. Ronald is predeceased by his parents, Paul and Grace Schiraldi, and his son-in-law, Gustavo Rivero.
Ronald loved his family dearly and was always seen with a huge smile at family gatherings, large or small, especially when around his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. Ronald and Louise spent very happy times with their three then young grandchildren at Fantasy Island Amusement Park in Beach Haven, NJ. It was at their home on Long Beach Island that Ronald taught his grandchildren how to raise the American flag on his flagpole, which he proudly flew every day to show his love of country. As his grandchildren grew, he became their greatest cheerleader and was always ready to help them with their schoolwork and their futures goals, and making sure that they knew at all times how much he loved them.
Whether one knew Ronald through family, medicine, the Navy, fishing, golf, Georgetown, or simply as that familiar friendly face around town, several unifying attributes touch upon all that he was: He was a man with a deep appreciation of family and of lifelong friendships. He had an unwavering desire to help and care for others. He had a bright, approachable smile and an easy laugh. He was a man with a calmness of character who put those around him at immediate ease, a man of enduring Catholic faith, and a man to be respected, appreciated and loved. For all these reasons and more, Ronald Schiraldi will be missed by so many, most especially his family as they carry out his legacy and hold love in their hearts for him always.
A mass in Ronald's memory will be held on June 30th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 28290 Beaumont Road, Bonita Springs, FL. Interment will follow at Palm Royale Cemetery, 6780 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Naples, FL.
